Subject: Headlight problems & column short

A few days ago I noticed my low-beams on my '00 R/T were out, so I replaced them both. They still didn't work, so I began reading posts and discovered it may be the headlight or dimmer switch. What I discovered was when I put up the tilt column, the headlights turn on, and when I put it down to drive, they go out. Obviosuly it sounds like a short, or pinched wires. Anyone have any advice on taking care of this? I have never had to work on the column, so don't know what level of expertise I need for this job or if it is better left for the professionals.

i have had the same problem. you need to remove the the plastic that goes around the steering column...there are 3 screws that hold it on...takes a 7/64 long shank allen wrench. remove the lever for the tilt wheel...plastic covers will now come off. look behind the turn signal stalk towards the intrument panel and you will see a black cover that is about 2" tall and rounded in the back...remove this cover. after removing black cover you will see a white connector that has 2 rows of about 8( i didn't count for sure)wires on top and bottom. the wire that you will be looking for is a purple one. for some reason that wire seems a little on the short side and has a way of working loose when you tilt the wheel. make sure that the wire is crimped real tight on the spade clip and push it back in the connector. check lights to make sure this fixed the problem. replace all parts removed in the reverse order and you should be good to go. i had problems about a month ago with this and it happened again this past saturday...took about 5 mins to fix the second time around.

That purple wire was the problem! It was laying right there when I took the covers off. I crimped it back in the connector and everything worked great. Thanks!
