Subject: front driveshaft trouble IP: Logged
Message: I have an 01 dakota 4.7, 5 speed. The other day I engaged the 4wd in the wet grass and I heard a sound that sounded like marbles rolling around. Well I looked under it and the front driveshaft had play in it so I took it out and the bearing connected to it was bad.Its a weird looking enclosed bearing with a rubber boot on it. It looks like the bearing and the driveshaft are one piece! Do I have to buy a new driveshaft "assembly". This truck is never off-roaded or abused . Also Ive read that there is a bearing inside the trasfer case that gets worn when the outer bearing on the driveshaft goes out, does anyone have any part #? I really dont want to go to the dealer for ANYTHING. Can someone help me out with part numbers for both bearings and a good recommendation to get them?

Message: I took it off and sent it to a machine shop in Toronto that specialized in rebuilding driveshafts & fabricating custom ones, they were only an hour away from me so it was inexpensive to ship it there. I can give you their info if you are from the Toronto area, if not I would look into finding a shop local to you that does the same.

Message: What you are seeing is a constant velocity joint (CV) and they do wear out.
They are also reffered to as a half-shaft when looking for replacement aparts.
A little info for you.

Message: Actually tlc361, Im talking about the front driveshaft that goes from the trasfer case to the front differential. The one you seem to be talking about is the shaft that goes from the diff to the wheel hub. I need the part # for the front driveshaft joint that connects the driveshaft to the transfer case, and or where I can buy one that doesnt include the dodge dealership. Surely someone has had to rectify this problem on their Dakota also! I dont want to go to the dealership b cuz I would spend big bucks for the same factory junk that has prematurely failed in the truck now, and I cant get one rebuilt beacause I dont have #'s for replacement parts. Thanks, though.

Message: 72Dodge, the part you're referring to is called a double cardan u-joint. Mine went bad in march, the front u-joint followed soon after. I took the drive shaft off and had a local machine shop rebuild it for $115. My dealer quoted me $265.

Message: I just ran in to this problem yesterday. I took the front drive shaft out for the time being. This just makes the truck a 2wd. If you shop around you can probibly find a front shaft from a salvage yard for less than 100 bones. I understand you dont want oem parts but this is very low cost alternative to something new and you could go through a fiew of these for the price of a new one.

Message: 72 Dodge,
(my 1st rig by the way. Loved it)...
I believe you will find that your OEM drive shaft was more than likely produced using Dana/ Spicer/ Mcquay-Norris parts, if not completely manufactured by them. You probably don't need a whole new shaft, just the joints replaced. Any reputable repair shop can perform this for you. Ask them to install the most stout joints available. You can even look them up on sites such as AutoZone.com, NAPA.com or the likes. They will show you all parts they have available and who makes them. Anymore, some of these parts houses will even print out directions for that individual task and 'loan' (with a deposit) any specialty tools required to perform it. I have a Service manual for my `95 dak, but still get their printed out directions...if nothing more, just to compare. Sometimes they are even more detailed!
Hope this helps.

Message: Hi guys, I too am having problems with finding the
right parts to rebuild my front driveshaft. I have a
2000 dakota club cab sport with 180000+. At first it
started with a little rattle that turned into what
sounded like an empty pop can being dragged down th
he street. I pulled the front shaft off and ran it
with just 2wd until I could figure out my options
but winter in Nd is not a place for 2wd so I had to
park it. Now after searching high and low i have
found that this is a 1310 cv joint driveshaft, which
has 3 1310 u-joints an H yoke and a centering
bearing with a machined boot inside the H yoke and
the only rebuild kit I could find was gonna cost me
$129 and it was for a jeep Cherokee but didn't
include the boot for the centering bearing. I found
complete driveshaft anywhere from $220 to almost
$400.
After all my searching I thought I had found a
driveshaft that would replace this conglomeration
with just a flat flange and a single u joint. I
shoulda known it wouldn't be that easy. Unless I
machine half circles for the u-joint, and drill and
tap bolt holes into my flat flange to match the
yoke coming out of my transfer case I will have to
go back to the old way. Which I really don't want to
do. Any ideas would be helpful. I don't have a lathe
so balance is a big concern. Thank, and i hope some
of this helps the rest of you.
