Ceramic: super expensive and warped rotors. Metallic: cheap and warped rotors. Since you'll be changing them when you put new rotors on in 6 months go with the cheap stuff.

Akebono makes a good ceramic for $75.00. I didn`t have time to order on-line so my mechanic put in metallic Wagner Quiet Stops(corroded slides hanging up pads). The Wagners are a lot less dusty than stock. I will get the Akebono`s next time,I hear good things about them.

I tighten my lug nuts using a click type torque wrench and have
never had rotors warp on me.

Thanks for all the input on ceramic v/s metallic.

From the (limited) research that I've done, the ceramics are:

o more expensive
o harder then metalic (better stopping, but stock rotors could become a problem)
o much less brake dust

The only problem that I've read about on other boards is that because the ceramic pad is a harder compound, that stock rotor wear/warpage became a problem.

I use a "click type" torque wrench too and I'm on my third set or brakes. The first two were crap from the stealership and the third set is the cheapest set I could find at the local parts store.

I know other Dak owners who can't keep their brakes for mor than a few months.

i must be lucky. i've got an '00 QC w/ 37,000 miles and still have more than 1/2 the pads left. no warped rotors either. i better find some wood to knock on. i'm wondering if working those self adjusting back brakes work everyday is helping.

I have 143,000 miles and still have the original rotors with no warping. I am on my second set of Raybestos best pads. I also use a click type torque wrench when I put the wheels on.

At 36,000 miles my '00 5.9 4wd QC required rotors.
I researched between ceramic and metalics and chose metalics after conversation with a number of rotor suppliers, who recommended metalics for the type of driving I do. (Includes towing).
I installed new Powerslots ($97 from BRAKEWAREHOUSE, very good folks to deal with [not cross drilled as I tow]) and HAWKHEAD pads ($27.00) I came across in net research. (Law enforcement testing of brake pads in 2000-10 manufacturers on 2 different partol cars).
Hawkhead came out second overall to ACDelco. I could not get information from ACDelco, but the folks at HAWKHEAD were excellent to deal with. (List price is about $57, sell over the net at $27-quite competative.)
I'm very happy with the quality and performance. Extreemely low dust and good brake performance.

Final analysis on the system will come in August when I tow to Glacier National Park.

Research pads for the type of driving you.

Oh, BTW, in 36K of driving quite conservatively with the rear brakes properly adjusted, my rotors still warped. I'm expecting the POWERSLOTS will give better service than the OEM rotors!!

E-mail for contacts for rotors or pads if you need,...

I had posted an experience I had while traveling to FLA in April, so I will keep it brief here. My front brakes had locked one side 200 miles from home, and the other when I reached Orlando. Both dealers felt that the pads my local dealer had put on ( to fix a rattle problem ) were the culprit. They had put aftermarket pads, not factory. They told me that the aftermarkets compound was not dissipating the heat effectivley and causing the fluid to boil which became self-defeating. I had never heard of a pad being the culprit for that type of situation, but the second dealer said that the piston was warped long before that side failed, and assumed that it had happened when the fluid boiled the first time. They replaced both rotors, calipers, bearings, pads and hoses with factory parts. The difference is VERY noticeable. The pads that my local dealer had put on didn't have the same stopping ability as these and the originals. I have heard of others having similar trouble and the aftermarket pads were blamed. Somehow it seems that some Daks don't like anything but factory. From now on, for the Dak anyway, I will insist on factory parts. I would say that if you want to go with ceramic, then put performance rotors on too, so that heat won't be a problem.

Were you asking about ceramic pads because DC is now selling ceramic pads (According to a Mopar magazine)? They rank cost as OEM (highest), cermaic (Mid), and ValueLine (Lowest).
BTW, I put 71,000 on the OEM pads and rotors with no problems and went valueline on the first replacement set. I have 30,000 on the VLines. The VLines don't stop as well as the OEM's. When the Vlines go, I'll go with OEM or ceramic (if available for a 96 with 4 wheel ABS).

the vlines are what caused my problems. So I know what you are going through with stopping ability. I didn't have any other trouble with them until I drove 4 hours, and then 20 - except for fuel - without stopping. Around home and 1/2 hour rides didn't show any signs of what was to happen.
