Subject: Always cut the Grn Wire? IP: Logged
Message: Darn Haynes manual and it's generic wire diagram is giving me a headache. I am trying to test that my fuel pump is getting power. I have five wires going into the pump. Green seems to be the ground, two seem to stay hot when the key is in the on position. I am assuming they are both to do with fuel level ... the other two don't seem to get anything when going from ignition postion 1 to 2 which should be a priming step nor do they get power when the engine is tapped. Which should I connect my test light to check for power to the pump. Thanks!

Message: Better to use/borrow a voltmeter ..
Your two " hot's " should read close to 12 volts
one of remaining should read proportionate
to fuel level [ if sender has been working ok ]
but this one may not light a test light..
Have you checked the ASD relay and associated
wiring in the underhood fusebox ?
Also the wiring harness from that fusebox back
to the firewall { look for a splice of 3 to 4 wires = probable poor connection on one =
redo the splice using a good quality "joiner "
or solder and tape up )

Message: The two wires that have no current when the key is in position 1 or 2 are your fuel sending unit wires. Your sending unit works off of ohms, so you will not get any current through those wires.
