Subject: disable seatbelt chime?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 SLT and, was wondering if there is a way to make the seatbelt chime silent. I need the chime for everything else, and I dont mind the seatbelt light on the dash. Its just very annoying that its chiming at me while I'm putting my belt on, and it stops before I'm finished anyway, so why bother. Ideas?

Not trying to be a jerk here, but if you put your seatbelt on before you start driving, it won't chime at you.

Just remembered that my father, a big guy who has never worn a seatbelt in his life (I don't let him drive with me- I tell him that he'd make a awfully big hole in my windshield) never has this problem in his truck. I think that he cut open the plastic sheath on the seatbelt and either cut or spliced the wire to fool it. Not that I would recommend it, just worth noting.

In 7 years as a firefighter/EMT in an urban area, I never transported a buckled-up person to a hospital, but ALWAYS had to transport unbuckled patients. The mayor was adamantly against seat belts, til he got broadsided and thrown against the passenger door and nearly broke his back. He was lucky; most people get ejected and killed.

One of the last people I transported who was unbuckled, had to have a Foley catheter inserted at the hospital. I heard bloodcurdling screams as I left the ER. Tell your father to consider that prospect.

Perhaps I didnt write my post correctly. I *DO* use a seatbelt, and its on before I even put it in drive. Here's how it goes:
1. get in truck
2. start engine -
2a. seatbelt lite glows
2b. chime dings
3. start putting on seatbelt, adjusting A/C, radio and whatever else
4. chime "gives up" and stops dinging
5. finish putting on belt - dash lite goes out
6. put it in gear and drive away.

I want item 2b to not happen. I guess it wouldn't drive me so crazy if it were to chime forever if I DIDNT put on the seatbelt. I just hate how its saying (in my mind) hurry up and put that belt on NOW!

P.S. This is in a 1998 - not a 97 as originally posted.... sorry for the typo.

Under the seat there is a cable connector wired to the bucle, may be the cable can be jumpered, I don't know if the normal state is open or close but you can try both.

That's weird...my 98 doesn't chime. I just have the light.

Do any of you people who always wear your seatbelt ever feel really strange if you try to drive somewhere without your seatbelt on (ie. from one store down to the end of the parking lot to another). That's how it is with me. Even if I wanted to drive without my seatbelt, I wouldn't be able to do it... I feel TOO unrestrained.

You know, I have no idea if my '03 chimes or not. But I pretty much do the same thing as PLarkinJr does:
-Start truck
-Put on seat belt, adjust radio, etc.
-Put it in drive & go.
Damn, now I'm wondering about that chime. I'll have to check when I get my Dak back from the shop.

Josh... yup, I'm the same way with the seat belt, can't drive without it, "too unrestrained". Been that way since the day I started driving.
-Lost a classmate in highschool. He lost control on the highway in the rain & hit a pole- no seatbelt.
-Years ago, my bother tried to take out an oak with his Dodge Dart. Oak didn't budge. He had his seatbelt on and escaped witha broken thumb and really nasty bruise across his chest (better than the alternative).
-Lost a Fraternity brother back in college, he fell asleep at the wheel and hit a parked truck- no seatbelt.
-Nearly lost another Fraternity brother, he got hit head-on... again no seatbelt, but he got lucky and only had to spend a couple weeks in the hospital.
-Had another buddy who was riding in the rear of a hatchback, driver got into an accident (only 20 mph) just enough force for him to roll into the back of the seats and break his neck. Got lucky and only had to spend a few months in this metal apparatus (sp?) that held his head straight.

Damn, sorry for the lost post... I just started rambling there for a while. And sorry for hijacking your post there PLarkinJr.

Yeah, I may try to find the cable under the seat... and I too feel unrestrained without the belt...
I first started wearing one after I spun a 68 impala with vinyl bench seats... nothing dramatic, but I ended up on passenger side.

Years later in my 88 Mustang (no airbag) I broadsided a chick who decided to turn left in front of me... was bruised and sore across where the shoulder harness went. Totalled her car and did a number on mine. But I walked away just fine.

Found it! Easiest mod on the truck yet!!

Under the driver's seat in the back is a wire connector. Disconnect it and stuff it back into the plus-shaped hole cut in the carpet from which it exits.

No more chime!
