Quick question. I need a bed liner for my Dak and don't know if I should get a lower cost throw in liner or get a spray on type. What is the price ranges for the spray on's? I don't want to spend too much if I don't have to.

My understanding is spray ins are 500-600 dollar range. I've never bought one though so I can't say for sure. I do have a drop in bedliner in my SXT RC I may be willing to part with rather inexpensively.

I have spray ins in both of my trucks. Best mod I've done and well worth the money. Mine were both about 400.00 after tax.

From a functional standpoint. The main differences betweem a drop in and a spray in os that with a drop in the surface is slicker so loading and unloading items may be easier.
A spray in type tends to grip items and makes it harder for items to move around. Better if you are carrying things that need to be realatively stable. Think about how you will need to use the bed and make a decision on that. After all you need to make the truck fit your needs and not someone elses.

Jim C is correct on the prices. should be around $400. You won't be happy with a drop in liner, spend the extra cash for a spray-in. If the shop doesn't spend at least an hour of prep work before spraying, it is a shop you want to stay away from. I have Rhino, holds up great, tends to fade though, my only complaint. I have seen Line-X after a few years, doesn't appear to fade like the Rhino. Fading has nothing to do with durability though, it is purely asthetic. Good luck.

The drop ins are great when you're haulin dirt or gravel when you're fixing up the yard and all that. The only problem with the drop ins is that water puddles up in isolated ares that doesn't dry very fast and that accelerates rust. I know what you're thinking. You say you'll take it out when you're done. NO YOU WONT! Trust me. Storing those drop ins in your back yard is a b!*ch! Go with the spay in and hose out the bed when you're done. Spray in has a more professional look too. You wont regret it.
And no, I dont work for either a drop in or spray liner company.

Ditto on the spray-in bed liner.
Get a few people together when you look to get yours done. The 2nd most time-consuming part is cleaning the equipment after a job... and if an installer can do 3 or 4 at once, it saves him $$, which he may pass on to you.
A spray-in also allows you the opportunity to customize your bed with lettering, etc. Do a search of the site for spray-ins and you will find a pretty sweet red R/T with a spray-in logo in the bed.

OVer the rail drop in on old truck came with the truck. HAd the truck 5 years. Traded it in when it had 110 thousand miles and was 8 yrs old. No gaping holes or mountains of rust eating away at the sheet metal, never took it off and looked underneat. Now have a drop in in my 04 Quad, this time under the rail.
Ive spoken to a few accessory shop owners before. They said with the way beds are rust proofed and painted nowadays, you may see paint rubbing caused by the liner but it won't rust through as easily as spray-in dealers would like to have you believe. I think 'galvanized' was the word they used. And yes, these are all guys who knew I already had a liner and was no longer in the market.
My philosophy: IF they have to scuff the bed anyway for a spray it, Im not going to that expense right now. I'll pay 210 for a drop in, and if I still want to keep it in another 6-7 years, THEN Ill remove the drop-in, fix whatever's underneath, and replace it with a spray in if I think it is warranted. But most people around here only seem to keep trucks 2-3 years so I don't understand why they're worried about severe bed damage that will take much longer than that if it happens at all.

I just removed a plastic liner from my '99, no rust but plenty of bare metal. Even under the tailgate protector. I put in HercuLiner. It was a bit of work, but that's what Sundays are for. The HercuLiner cost me $68 on sale at Menards, plus I got a $20 rebate. Looks good so far, if I see another post later I'll update on how its holding up.

'01 CC 4.7L 4x4 Line-X installed day after I drove it off the lot would highly recommend it all you need to clean it is a brush and a hose it's worked wonders in my truck.
I looked at a number of Dak's with the drop-in liners and every one of them, all 99's and up, had some amount of rust in the bed from wear and tear with the bed liner moving around. I suspect none of these owners every took the thing out and cleaned below it so the rocks, dirt, etc just tore up the finish of the bed...

Have an '02 Quad Cab that came with an over-the-rail drop in. Not only is the paint worn in many places, the bed is already starting to rust.
Torn between Line-X and a local shop. Both will cost between $450 and $490 for over-the-rail spray in.
Just saving the pennies now, and wondering if anyone wants to buy a drop in for a Quad Cab (in NYS)
