Subject: Questions about 05 Daks IP: Logged
Message: A few of these questions might have been answered before but I haven’t been here long enough to check out everything so if you wouldn’t mind answering them again, I’d be very appreciative. 1. What is everyone’s opinion on the next generation Dakota? I really like it but wish it came with a Hemi. 2. When will this new Dakota come with a Hemi, if at all? 3. Has anyone heard of a starting price range for next years model, any rumors? 4. Right now I have a 2002 Dakota SXT regular cab with the 3.9L V6. Automatic, AC, CD and that’s pretty much it. Close to 24K miles and not a single problem, I LOVE THIS TRUCK! I’m thinking of putting in power windows/door locks with remote keyless entry/remote starter and a GPS Navigation system (not the $1200 ones, the ones you can take with you and aren’t that expensive). All that should go for about $1000, the question I have is should I bother putting that stuff in or should I wait around for the 2005 and get it with all the toys that I want in it? I use this truck for more of a work truck then a play truck. Not to mention all I have is a K&N air filter and straight pipe exhaust so it sounds pretty good but its to slow. Any suggestions, comments, anything is welcome. Thank you and I really enjoy this site.

Message: Now word on a hemi or a diesel. IMO, the hemi is nice, but I wouldn't trade up for that reason alone.
As far as the local salesman knows (FWTW) pricing will be generally the same as a 2004. They like to do that to draw you in and score advertsing points. I'm sure there will be a price increase 6-8 months after debut.
Financially speaking, you're much better off upgrading your truck than buying a new one. Think of what your monthly payments would be. If you love that truck, keep it.
If it's too slow, there are lots of ways to boost power. My first thoughts are better gears and a blower. Sounds radical, but it's the best bang for the buck and still maintain good economy.

Message: My $.02 regarding question #1.
Dodge took a great truck and ruined its looks. In a closed (by invitation) focus group viewing in December, 2002 I saw what has become the 2005 Dakota, and ran through a large questionare regarding its looks, image, comfort, pricing, etc.
At the show it was still a little rough compared to the pictures of the final product we have now. But, the big objections I had then are still present.
1) The front bumper appears to stick farther out than it should. It looks like a fat lip.
2) There's way too much chrome on it. Especialy the big rectangular grille.
3) The front fender lines don't blend into the doors. They meet at hard angles and it looks like they are stuck on, much like a bad ricer body kit.
There were also current model year (2003 at the time) Dakotas displayed around the room. Every time I looked at the new one and then the 2003 I couldn't believe such a good thing was going to be ruined. That day has come.
I'll keep my 2002 for as long as it holds together. I can live without a 5.7l Hemi...

Message: Lookswise, I love the 05's interior but hate the exterior. Someone on this board awhile back gave us a photoshop version of what an 05 regular cab would look like, and I liked the lines of the truck alot better on the regular cab but unfortunately Dodge is discontinuing the reg cab version of the Dakota. If gas prices remain high, you could probably expect Dodge to push the truck out the door with some big rebate incentives soon after it comes out. If you're going to buy it, you should wait for the 06 model year--you don't want to buy a new model year vehicle, especially from Dodge. Better to wait until some of the bugs are worked out. Plus, starting in 05, the Dakota is finally going to have some real competition in the mid-size truck category. There's going to be an all new Tacoma and an all new Frontier coming out, and both of them are going to be bigger, pushing them into the mid-size category. Plus, Honda is coming out with an SUT and Mitsubishi should be coming out with its own truck built off the Dakota platform. This kind of competition might force Dodge to lower the price, increase the incentives, or both.

Message: I also have an 02 dakota. I am very happy with it and also like the new one.
My plan is to keep this one as long as I can and if something better comes along then I will move on. (Dakota with hemi, Titan or something not out yet).
If you like your truck then keep it and make it comfortable for you. Most of the stuff you can transplant to your next one anyway.

Message: The holy answer to everyones question is YES! the 05 is gonna have the hemi as what was said n the minitruckin issue i have to lazy though to go and c what month it was n but the only other positive note i can make about the 05 is that the frame is gonna be fully boxed n for added strength but i think dodge took a step back because the body curves r to significant and dont flow as nice as the 97-04 models do but u can only re-invent the wheel so many time before u have try something new i guess anyways ill stick with my 03!
