Well, after a good drive to pick it up, I'm finally in my new 04 SXT Dakota!! yippie!! so far I'm pretty impressed with performance of the 3.7l engine. It's a regular cab 5 speed. After owning a 99 dakota, I know that the 3.9l doesn't have much low end power but does have really good top end. So knowing this, I wasn't sure how a smaller 3.7l would stack up to it. I'm pretty impressed though. It seems to have good power throughout the rpm range. What's even better is that the more I drive it and break it in, the stronger the motor runs. Anyway, this is my first day with it, but I just wanted to share my opinion because I know there is alot of people not quite sure about the 3.7l since it's so new.

glad to see a few 3.7L dakotas on the board! i bet its a screamer of a v6! i think they held the 4.7L back for some reason...

the 3.7 is rated 210 HP and the 4.7 is 230. only 20hp diff for 1 liter?? i dont know the torque of the 3.7 though i'm pretty sure the 4.7 is 295 lb/ft.
i love my 4.7 though, i just think DC could have done better with the power... maybe they didnt want to get closer to the hemi's power! (closer anyways)
according to my calculations, the 3.7L has 56.756 HP per liter. and the 4.7, has 48.936 (HP/L) so if we multiply the 3.7's hp/liter value (56.756*4.7), we come up with 266.76 HP!!! thats a little bit higher than 230 LOL!! maybe its just a lower compression ratio, or cams.... hard to say

speaking of the 3.7 4.7. i wonder if you can swap the 3.7 throttle body, for one off of a 4.7?

Basically the 3.7 is the 4.7 with 2 cylinders cut off.

no it's not.

different compression, different stroke... different everything you cant see on it.

yeah it has the same alternator and accessories.. but the motor itself is not the same.

Ah! that would explain it.... thanks intense! That would make for the discrepancies in the HP per liter.....

I too have the 3.7. I'm quite impressed with the low end power. It pulls away from the line nicely. I recently took mine through some nice country dirt roads and it would pull itself up steep hills with ease. Didn't take it over anything too ruogh as I was just going fly fishing. Its quiet too. It comes from the factory with an electric fan, so no power robbing fan clutch and associated noise.

Isn't DC gonna offer two different 4.7's...regular 4.7L and High Ouput 4.7L? That could be why they're holding it back so it'll make the High Output one look even better.

If buying a new Dodge truck (regardless of size) the rating on your the 287 is 230 HP and 290 ftlbs.

The 225 V6 (or 3.7L) makes 235 ftlbs so its only a 10 ftlbs differnce between the two. But you get more of a % at the lower end of the toruqe band and thats what OHC motors do well. Fords 3v 5.4 Triton makes 80% of its toruqe at just 1000 RMPs.

Also the 3.7 and 4.7 use the same block just like the 5.2 and 3.9 (LA block)

I'm still think of what powertrain to get in my new Dakota. I'm still leaning on the V6 because I don't really pull but 3500 pounds of boat. So i gess a 5 speed reg cab 4x4 would do nicely.

When you're talking about "toruqe" at 1000 "RMPs" the math's a little different.

I think what he meant was the difference between the 225ci and the 235ftlbs of torque. Anyway, if you really don't mind having a V6 for a new Dakota, I would seriously consider the 3.7L. I've only had mine for about 3 days now and I've already had a blast driving it. It seems to have plenty of power. I think that it is a really good improvement over the 3.9L.
