Subject: 2004 dakota question IP: Logged
Message: I'm glad to say that I'll be joining the Dakota family once again tomorrow. It's a 2004 5sp with the 3.7l motor. My last dakota was a 99 with the 3.9l. I was just wondering how the 3.7l stands up to the 3.9l in performance? It's good to be back!

Message: I had a 2002 with the 3.9, it was listed as 175 horsepower. The new 3.7 is supposed to have 210 horsepower.

Message: I have a '04 Club Cab with 3.7L. It's my first Dak, so I really can't say how it compares. My only regret is not getting the 4.7L V8. Not for the lack of power, but more so the lack of info on the 3.7 engine. There is only a mile or so difference in mileage.

Message: There'll be more info out before too long... those engines are still very new. The 4.7's were terrible to get info on when they were that new as well. If you drove a 4.7L though, you'd prolly still have regrets...from what Dan (DaffyDak) says since he's had both a 3.9L and now a 4.7L, there's a world of difference between the 3.9L and the 4.7L (so there'd be a considerable difference between the 3.7L and the 4.7L).

Message: 3.9L
175HP @ 4800RPM
225 lb-ft of torque @ 3200 RPM
3.7L
210HP @ 5200RPM
235 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 RPM
For a small gain in torque you really have to wind the 3.7L out. It's performance is more car like than truck like. To be honest I would be concerned about it's longevity. IMHO if you plan on doing any towing or heavy hauling for extended periods you should prolly go with the 4.7.
The again, the Tundra does pretty well with a car motor. Borrow one from a dealer and pound the snot out of it. I don't imagine they would have put it in our trucks if it was an absolute POS. I've driven a few Liberty's with it and it was great in that platform.
Bottom line...I don't know.

Message: All then again you got to look at the toruqe peek. You stated that the new 3.7 puts out 235 lbs at 4000 reves and the larger 239 (3.9) is at 3200 revs.
But I think the toruqe curve is flatter on the smaller 225.

Message: Well, I've had the truck for about a week now and I'm extremely happy with it. After owning two 3.9L Dakotas I can say that my 3.7L has a good bit more power than either one. With the 3.9 you had to get the rpm's on up there before you could feel much power. The 3.7 pulls away from the line very nicely without having to get into the throttle and has really good power throughout the rpm's. Thanks for all of the input!
