Subject: Are my Freeze Plugs Leaking IP: Logged
Message: I was changing my oil and I noticed anti-freeze leaking from in front of my bell housing while I was draining it. I figured this wasn't good, so I did some checking and everyone thinks it's my freeze plugs. First question, are my freeze plugs leaking? If they are, how complicated is it to fix them? I have been told that the only way to fix them is to drop the tranny. BTW, I have a 97 2wd with a 5 Speed.

Message: they are not hard to change out. just a pita. it is possible for the freeze plugs to leak due to corrosion. if it's the one on the end of the head should not be too bad. if it's on the end of the block you'll have to drop the tranny.

Message: Finding a fluid leak can be a little difficult and tedious. Just about any leaking fluid will end up on the front of the block plate eventually. So you really need to take some time and discover where - exactly - that fluid is coming from.
Get a leak detector kit from Pep Boys (or wherever). Basicly, it's a flourescent dye and a black light. Place the required amount in the cooling system , and run it for just a few minutes untill it's fully warm and the thermostat is open.
Clean the engine and compartment really well with a good degreaser and a pressure washer. I usually use Simple Green.
Let it sit long enough for everything to be completly dry. This is important, it has to be completly dry, every nook and cranny.
Now, in the garage, run the engine just long to get it warm and build a little pressure in the system. Close the garage door, turn off the lights, and you should be able to find the leak.
