Subject: Clear Oil Leaking from differential. IP: Logged
Message: I have clear fluid leaking in front of the differential where the driveshaft goes into the differential. I am assuming its some kind of gasket, how easy is it to replace and can anyone give me some instructions.
Thanks,
Claude

Message: Differential oil/gear oil is not clear. Check your fluid level and make sure that's what it is.

Message: What else could it be? The exact procedure to replace the pinion seal is in the service manual. Remove driveshaft, pinion nut, and pull the yoke off the splined shaft. Pry out the old seal and replace with a new one. You may have to torque the nut, but I had an old Chevy and the pinion nut worked loose over the years. I didn't have a service manual so I just retightened the nut without torqueing it. This has been eight years now and the truck is still doing fine. I used loctite on the nut to prevent it from loosening up again.

Message: I have two dumb questions:
1. Before I do this procedure do I need to drain the differential fluid? I would assume yes, and what kind do I replace with.
2. What torgue do I have to tighten to?
I don't have the service manual thats why I am not sure.
Thanks,
Claude
