Subject: Whats up with half shafts? IP: Logged
Message: I was reading an article in an old copy of Petersons 4x4 and it said the rear thats in my dak has half shafts. I dont know what they are but they said they arent to good for offroading. what are they, what are they used for and why do they have them?

Message: Wouldn't the FRONT have the half-shafts? The rear is a solid axle case in the Dakota.
To answer your other question;
The half-shafts drive the FRONT wheels with the differential being solidly bolted to the the frame. This design allows for much less unsprung weight thus a better ride. This was part of the complete redesign of the 4X4 front end with rack-pinion steering in the 2000 Dakoata.
Starting next year, even the RAM 1500 will lose the solid front axle going to half-shafts. Much less heavy-duty but a better-riding and handling rig on the road.
