Subject: Sounds like BB's in a hubcap IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys,
I have a 2000 QC Sport 4x4, with the 4.7 V8. The tranny is auto w/OD. Lately, I've been hearing a crackling that resembles what BB's in a hubcap would sound like. When I start to accelerate I hear it, and it gets faster as I accelerate. It stops around 25mph. I do not hear it as I slow down. Originally, I thought maybe an exhaust leak, but I don't hear it when I rev the engine with the tranny in Park. If I had hubcaps on my truck, and 2 or 3 BB's bouncing around inside it, hat's what it sounds like. My only guesses are that it has something to do with the tranny, drive shaft, or hubs maybe. I say these things based on my knowledge of a Ranger, and I'm still learning my way around the Dak. I have not been able to pinpoint if its in the front center, or rear of the truck, but its getting louder it seems. Any ideas what the issue is? Thanks..

Message: I think NO Name is pretty close. more than likely bad U-joints. Another possibility, but unlikely since it continues up to 25 mph is something loose in the rear brake drums. Either way you need to check it out.

Message: I'd agree with both of you, and thanks for the feedback, but this morning I got an oil change and 3 mechanics there (I know these guys pretty well) say there's a good possibility its the catalytic converter. Has anyone else heard of this?

Message: It is highly possible. Get under your truck and with the heel and palm of your hand smack the catalytic convertor and see if you here them BB's shaking around in there.

Message: cheeup,
I had a similar problem. Just had my Cat replaced on my 03dak- at only 4500 miles. I had a tinny rattle at low speed/ low rpms- like when pulling out of (or backing into) the driveway. Never at a standing idle or on the highway. Guess that the vibration was just right at certain rpms.
Anyway, Old Fool's right on the mark... reach under the truck and smack the cat. Just make sure that it's cooled off! You'll hear it rattle if that's the problem. Also, have you noticed your mpg dropping off lately? Bad cat will do that too.

Message: Hey fellas, I've smacked my cat a few times but I didn't hear anything rattling. Also, when my tranny is in PARK and I rev it up, I don't hear it. Several months ago I posted that my 4WD ON light doesn't come on on the dash. I was told that it might be nothing, OR it might mean that my hubs aren't engaging, even though the t-case is engaged. I'm getting concerned that it might not be the cat after all.
If it is the cat, what do I tell the dealer to keep them from raping me for various charges. I'm aware of teh warranty, but I'm sure they are topo, and want to avoid warranty repairs.

Message: Cheep,
Just wondering if you managed to get that problem fixed. Stumbled upon this post today, it reminded me of your issue. Seems that some guys have had a problem with the clips rusting/breaking off of the brake pads and the broken bits rattling around inside the caliper piston. Worth a try.
Here's that thread...

Message: Hey John,
Thanks for letting me know about this. I took my truck into the dealer, and of course, they didn't find anything. The funny thing was that it had gotten REALLY bad and loud, so I was CONVINCED it was the cat. Then, I got an oil change, drove it about 3 more days before taking it to the dealer, and in those 3 days the noise was almost completely gone...to the point where I couldn't even recreate it. So naturally when I took it to the dealer they never heard it, much less found it.
The problem, as it existed before, could be plainly heard everytime I pushed the gas pedal between 5 and 30mph. Never heard it when tranny was in Park and revved the engine though. Because of this, your idea sounds very interesting. I'll have it checked. Thanks again, John. I'll let ya know what happens.

Message: Don't get mad at me for suggesting something so simple, but could it have been a ping? Or maybe explosions in the exhaust? Most fuel stations have made the switch to summer grade fuel now, so maybe the winter fuel was too low an octane with all the additives.

Message: Peedee, all possible solutions are welcome. Unfortunately, it wasn't a ping or exhaust explosion. It was a crackling sound. I have noticed that it is only on the warmer days after the truck is warm, at speeds under 35-40 mph. I can't figure it out, but all suggestions will be be mentioned when I go back to the dealer. Thanks....

Message: I should have replied sooner to this, but I'm a loafer by profession and preference. The squeeking was getting really loud, the vibraions were getting worse, so I broke down, took it to the dealer, and the guy drove about 20 feet and said "Oh yeah...u-joints" Both of them were shot. Had them replaced, warranty covered, and no problems since. Actually, I think she has more top-end power now...
THanks everyone for help and suggestions.

Message: How in the world could replaced U-joints give you more top end power? But definitely thanks for letting us know about the fix. Too many times on here you see a problem posted but then they're never courteous enough to come back and tell us the fix so that it's helpful to future people with the same problem..

Message: Long shot, but if there's a lot of friction in the U-joints, that'll rob a few ponies.
Anyhow, thanks for the tip. I checked mine today, all five of 'em, just to be sure.

Well, that's two points each for "no name" and "Old Fool"!
Anyway, glad to hear you got it fixed. And, like Justi said, it's always nice to hear what the fix was.

Message: Yeah, slam dunks for No Name and Old Fool. I can't count the number of times I've read deep into a thread and couldn't find a resolution toa problem, so I make a point to post something when I find a fix. I'm doing some mods to my truck right now, and within two weeks will have some details on that. I've had a lot of help from DMM. Thanks again Doug. I'm adding a PopnLock electric tailgate lock, a towing wiring harness, a power receptacle in the bed, and LED lighting under the bed rails so I can see without lifting my tonneau.
