Subject: Front hubs on 4x2 IP: Logged
Message: I had my front wheels off over the weekend and noticed the driver side hub had a litte looseness to it, also there was some grease oozing out from the area.I am figuring this thing probably needs to be repalced before it causes any damage and need some input from someone experienced in this , Do I need to replace or can i just tighten the nut a little back to factory spec? If I need to repalce it is there a parts source other than the damn dealer? thanks

Message: I'm no pro, but I've been around a lot of them. Before I spent the money to replace it I would snug it down a bit and check it in a week or so.Never spend money if you dont have to. It sounds like just a loose bearing, nothing really unusual.

Message: Don't you just love those sealed bearings? The passanger side front wheel bearing nut was a little loose on my 00 2WD, not torqued down properly and I thought the worse. After beating the pizz out of the bearing to get it out of the hub I was able to inspect it. The bearing looked great, only problem was removing the bearings renders them useless because the seals get destroyed.
I replaced the left and right front wheel bearings which was about $70 for the 2 bearings. Who knows I could have just retorqued the loose bearing and been down the road again. I think the vibration of warped rotors loosened the hub nut.
The bearing along is $30-50, complete hub from an auto parts store $100-130, complete hub from dealer $fogedaboudit ;)

Message: Thanks guys, Yeah I've had both trains of thought on this thing and decided to replace it to be on the safe side, will inspect it closely after i get it out and post again, that side had a really bad rotor and tire wear, Rock Auto has em for about 94$ which was the best price I could find. After spending the money on the slots and pads I aint taking any chances.

Message: I have an 01 CC. Does anyone have the part #s for the bearings alone. I want to get mine replaced and don't want to pay for new hubs.
thanks

Message: The bearing assembly's can be replaced without replaceing the entire hub, Auto Zone has them I think they were called "Timken set 42". I just replaced mine about 2 months ago, about 35.00 a side. They come out much easier if they are pressed rather than beat out, you can use the old bearing outer sleave to press in the new one. Mopar 8 is right they call for 185 lb ft.
