Subject: The Truth about Dakotas IP: Logged
Message: It seems to me that Dakota's (mainly GenIII's) come off the assembily line all messed up or not. I hear ( not just from this site but from other places, along with my best friend who has a 01 dakota) that these trucks are horrible in the reliablity departmet ( the main ones ball joints brakes etc...) My friend along with others have had problems ever since they have owned them and hate dodge for it... yet i have a 99 4x4 with the 3.9 and nothing, absolutly nothing has gone wroth with it. The rotors seem to be starting the signs of warping but thats at 80k. Yet my friend treats his truck like a baby and it seems to be in the deal alot, yet i admit i dont beat the hell outa my truck but i sure do go offroading in it, gets muddy as hell, and the ball joints and everythnig else is fine... The thing that is bothering me is that i dont get how some daks have all these problems, yet others, like me, do treat them wit hcare, but use them to their potential as well , and the yare fine? It just doesnt make sense...

Message: some people know nothing about cars, don't want to learn how to fix little problems, don't want to pay to fix them, don't want to pay for a tundra.
So complaining is free.
It's a mid size truck.
it's not a 2.0 L honda for gas mileage.
it's not a 400 HP corvette for speed
it's not a 10 ton dump truck for haulin.
So quit crying or sell it.

cj- As with all auto makers, DC buys the parts for its vehicles from hundreds of different manufacturers. Some of those parts will be of consistent quality, and some won't. The ones that aren't don't have a 100% failure rate - it may be high, but not all of them will fail (prematurely).
Any time there is a problem with a OEM part they will be extremely reluctant to switch suppliers because it will affect their bottom line. That's why vehicles with better reputations for reliability cost more.
Dakotas are great vehicles for DIYers. Most parts are (relatively) cheap, readily available, and these trucks are easy to work on (lots of room under the hood, etc.)
As for the less mechanically inclined, they will have to worry less about the initial purchase price and more about the customer service reputation of the dealer.

Message: couldn't have said it better. anyways, it holds true of any vehicle. There will always be failure vehicles coming off the line. I mean i hear people on here all the time complaining about transmission failure at like 50 thousand miles, yet mine has almost 190,000 without any kinda problems. Also, i have an 85 that has 225,000 on it and it runs really good considering the lack of maintenance.

Message: Nicely said guys. The Dakota is a good pickup truck despite the common problems we hear on these forums. The last two issues of Motor Trend's Car & Truck Review have stated the Dakota as being the best deal and best looking truck out of ALL the classes. I love my Dakota, which is starting to act up on me now, but I'll pay for these little fixes. I've seen worse.

Message: The Dakota has a rep for Brake and ball joint failure. Well on my Dak I replaced the rotors at 42,000 miles, not due to warpage but from serious cracks that went all the way thru. This I know was my own damn fault, when I used to drive it on the AutoBahn and have to slow down really quick from 130+ mph when some stupid american would change lanes in front of me at 70 mph (germans rarely do stupid crap like this).
I just had my tranny rebuilt at 46,000 miles and it was a warranty job (have the extended warranty). This also was my own damn fault, I raced my truck every friday night last season at the drag strip (12 weekends) here 4 sessions in Texas and 4 fridays this season. So my 5 speed tranny has been beat on like a stupid woman. It still performed OK for normal driving but the sinks was gone and scratched really bad on 5,000+ rpm shifts, and god fobid I rap it up to 6,800 rpms to shift. But since the rebuild everything is fine.

Message: I have a '00 Dakota ( bone stock 3.9 automatic )with 44,000 miles. I had some early brake problems with it which still aren't completely gone. I agree with the post about not being a Honda-Vette-10 Ton. I have a Honda-Never owned a 'Vette but have driven them-Used to be a Long haul trucker so I can relate to these points. In the past 2 months I have made three trips to eastern Tn. from Oklahoma Pulling a fully loaded 5X8 U-Haul trlr. using the stock bumper hitch. Just returned yesterday from the latest trip. I don,t necessarily like all the downshifting, but I just try to remember that it is a 3.9, 175hp V-6. It is used primarily for transportation, but when I ask it to be a beast of burden it has never refused.BTW fuel mmilage depends on my right foot. With a LOADED trlr I range between 11-14 MPG. W/O the trlr at 70-85 MPH 13-17 MPG. I love my Dak.

or this.....
The first one is mine the second one is Tim's that lives in Switzerland. And both trucks have and do excede 135 mph.
And yes American Woman, I'm sorry you feel a kinship to my previous post and feel so insulted.

\Big"ot\, n. [F. bigot a bigot or hypocrite, a name once given to the Normans in France. Of unknown origin; possibly akin to Sp. bigote a whisker; hombre de bigote a man of spirit and vigor; cf. It. s-bigottire to terrify, to appall. Wedgwood and others maintain that bigot is from the same source as Beguine, Beghard.] 1. A hypocrite; esp., a superstitious hypocrite. [Obs.]
2. A person who regards his own faith and views in matters of religion as unquestionably right, and any belief or opinion opposed to or differing from them as unreasonable or wicked. In an extended sense, a person who is intolerant of opinions which conflict with his own, as in politics or morals; one obstinately and blindly devoted to his own church, party, belief, or opinion.
I don't see any thing that looks like it is posted by a bigot. Maybe you do wear white sheets.
