Subject: How do I remove fan on Magnum? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Dakota 318, and I just purchased a Flex-a-lite BM 150 to replace my stock belt driven fan. My question is this: Does anyone know how the HELL you are supposed to remove the fan. The Magnum motors have a nut that holds the fan onto a stud that sticks out of the water pump. I cannot hold the d@mn water pump with anything to keep it from turning while trying to loosen the nut. According to my Haynes manual (which sucks), there is supposed to be a special tool "available at most auto parts stores" to hold the bolts on the WP pulley so it wont turn. First of all, there are no bolts, the frigin nut that attaches the fan clutch to the pulley, holds the pulley on the stud, and second, the guy at Auto Zone didn't know what the hell I was talking about. One more thing, I don't even know which way I should be turning the nut to loosen it. Haynes book says counter-clockwise, and Auto Zone man says clockwise. This is becoming an incredibly aggravating project, and this is my daily driver so I have to put everything back together and drive it the next day when I fail to make any progress. Thanks ahead for all of your help, if any.

Message: I also installed this same fan. Use a 1 7/16 or a 36mm wrench on the nut. I bought mine at Ace for $20. Put a little WD-40 on the nut if it's stubborn (don't get any on the belt) give the wrench a whack with a hammer from right to left as you are standing in front of the truck. Mine came off with two hits. I didn't have any problem with the pump turning it just came loose. I had nothing but bad luck with the adjustable thermostat that came with my BM150, flexalite even sent me three replacements for free and none of them worked. Maybe you will have better luck.

Message: Now you have me worried, my buddy who works at Summit was a little skeptical about the "capillary tube" being effective. Thanks for the advice though, someone else suggested that same technique, so I guess there is no harm in me trying it out, I hope it works. Seems like evertime I wrenched on it the pulley would turn and it wouldn't loosen the nut...

Message: I've used the BM fan with the capillary thermostat on a couple of Ford's. Here's the trick. If you follow the instructions, the capillary tube is placed at the very top of the radiator. Unless you are really good (or really lucky) when filling the cooling system, you often end up with an air bubble in the top of the radiator. This air bubble doesn't get hot enough to trigger the thermostat switch. Just feel the top of your radiator core when the truck is hot.
The answer is to rotate the fan housing 90*, so the capillary tube is located lower in the core.

Message: Patrick,
If it's anything like the 4.7 motor, and I think it is, there are many thinkgs you can do, and shouldn't cost a dime.
As said, spray the nut, near the pulley, with some lube of some sort. (You do know that that nut DOESN'T hold the pulley on, right?, just the clutch/fan. The pulley is pressed on)
I used a pipe wrench on the nut, it's regular direction thread, I put a short piece of wood on the wrench, so I could give it a good whack, without damaging anything.
You can put a straight screwdriver thru the holes in the pulley, and mate it against the water pump, to give some extra hold to the pulley, while you whack the wrench.
You don't need to buy any tools, unless you can't even borrow a pipe wrench, or large adjustable wrench.
Good luck

Message: yeah, keep your belt on, and if it still slips, then you should replace the belt. whack it from drivers to passengers side, while facing the truck from the front. I knocked mine loose with a 1 7/16 wrench and a 5lb sledge hammer... I was getting pissed at it, and busted out the big hammer! 3 whacks and off it spun.

Message: Hey thanks for the help everyone.I got the fan off with a Ford clutch removal wrench I borrowed from Auto Zone, and yes the belt was slipping. Unforunately I felt the need to replace my thermostat ( I am also replacing my water pump). First turn of one of the bolts on the thermostat housing snapped one of the bolt heads clean off, so the funny thing is, removing the fan yesterday was the easiest thing I did.
