Subject: Where are the 383s? IP: Logged
Message: Just curious. This chick I work with has a 383 in her dak and it sounds so amazing. Is the 383 like a 4.7 or something? Dont ever hear anyone else talking about them.

Message: 383 is a old school big block (Dodge Charger). Looks exactly like the 400. Same block. Diff bore/stroke.
Would be bad ass. Maybe that chick was full of BS as well, but who knows. Some chicks know cars.

Message: But with a smaller bore, and heads designed for leaded fuel. So when you find a low deck big block Dak (fairly rarely, see above), it would more likely have the more recent 400, available in boneyards everywhere with heads with hardened exhaust seats.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: i have talked to a few guys with 440's. I know one guy that had a 383 put now he has a 451 stroker (400 block + 440 crank). It wouldnt be that hard to get around the unleaded fuel.. just get a set of 452 heads but most get hardened seats installed in 906 heads.

Message: The 383 was the hot ticket if you were out for budget muscle. A '69 Road runner, taxicab interior, Air Conditioning? What's that? Ya buncha wussies!!!! Radio delete. Who needs tunes? Black steel wheels with chrome lug nuts. 383/4V/4-speed/3.90 gears got a car that'd run high 14's and still weighed in around 3700 lbs. Remember, this was with point-type ignition. With a modern cam, better ignition, and much better tires, you're looking at a 13-second screamer.

Message: Back when I was a young-un, my dad used to talk about his 383 RoadRunner. The one thing he had to sell to pay for my trip into this world. He used to talk and eating up bigblock Chevies when he worked out in the oil fields of North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.
Almost made me feel bad for being born, meant he had to part with a jewel I'd give almost anything to have these days.

Message: Izzy, you're getting me all sentimental now. My dad sold his '65 'Stang convertible when I was just a few months old. He actually traded it in on a '68 Charger. Black hardtop with AC (deep south, and hey, the 'Stang didn't have air--Baby on board). Anyway, he was talking about car shopping, and they were looking at the Dodge lot, and all the sudden, there it was. Glistening black beauty of a car (Remember "Bullit"?). Well, it was a 318 car, but still awesome. Spent my first few years in that car. Later on we had a red '70 Charger, and that one had a 383 Magnum. Many years later, I completed the series with my first car, a '69 Charger. Eventually, I'll have another. Went from the Charger to an '89 Dakota with a POS tranny, and several 4-bangers along the way. Oh God, how times have changed!

Message: I installed a 383 just recently in my 92 dakota using schumachers engine swap kit. Great project! love it, its actually to much for such a small truck but who can get enough of smoking tires off and spinning donuts. I warn ya, if you put more than 400 hp in a dakota and it isnt tubbed, it aint gonna hook up!
