Subject: Question about my rearend. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 4x4 with a LSD in the rear that has been giving me fits. It grinds when you turn R or L from a stop, especially on a incline. I've changed fluid 3 times now, used everything Amsoil with and without friction additive, Mopar synthetic with friction modifier. Still there.Looks clean as a whistle inside. I talked to Dodge service manager and he suggested that I replace the whole LSD unit for $800.00.I talked to a mechanic friend of mine that specialises in trans and drivetrain work and he said that chances are, I only need to replace the clutch packs in the rear end at about $200.00.
Are there any mechanics out there that could give me their opinon on these options and prices.Dodge says it's too much trouble to replace clutch packs, my friend says it's a simple operation.

Any chance you are still covered under 70,000 mile or a possible extended warranty you may have purchased that mite take you to 100k? (This is "drivetrain" work and subject to warranty if you are still eligible.
I had same problem with my '02 4x2 with LSD. It started out as a hum at 11,000. Had bearings, spacers, & seals replaced at 15,000. 28,000, and 38,000(between 28k and 38k it was "crunching" as you say and I was told by one dealer/mechanic it mite be the LSD clutch plates sticking. Apparently that wasn't the case) . They finally got it right at 38,000. You have to be persistent with Dodge and get their best diagnostic mechanic. Apparently proper parts replacement technique is critical on these rear ends. If you want I will send you lists of parts they used each time. My last fix was Sept '03 and I now have 51,000 miles on it and no "crunching" or huming.

Message: Yeah sounds like the clutch discs are shot.. usually the dealership would rather pull out and swap for a new one than take the time to deal with a rebuild.... the shop mechanics are specialized enough sometimes to deal with the fine tuned inards of a LSD, as was earlier stated by richmead, these are tuned parts, and if not done correctly, it can end up worse if the mechanic doensn't know what he's doing. MY guess is thats what's happening at that dealership... could be that they've been through this before, and it cost THEM to replace it after a mechanic F'ed one up... I'd call around (or if you know someone, as it sounds like you do) to get the clutch pack replaced. check on that warranty too...
