Message: Thinking of trading my 3.9 4x4 for a 4.7(in 2005). My only complaint about my truck is the gas mileage. My weak 175 H.P. 3.9L gets an avarage of 14.5 MPG and I almost have to push it up hills. Dodge killed this engine for a reason! I was wanting to know how much power and gas mileage do you get from your 4.7L.

Message: Think long, think wrong - I don't think you'd regret that trade. 15 mpg for my '00 4.7 RC 4x4, and no effort at fuel economy. Much better power - I test drove the 3.9 and wouldn't even consider it. You might not mind the similar milage if you're happier with the power.

Message: I get around 14 mpg and I'm a lead foot. If you drive on the hwy more, you wil definitely see an increase in mpg depending on how much more you drive the hwy.

Message: I've got two 2000 dakotas with 4.7s-one quad cab-gets 14-14.5 and a club cab that gets 16+. I've not had the quad cab on a trip yet. The club cab is a lot quicker. Both have 355 rear ends. But all my driving is short distances.

Message: I have an 04 4.7L QC FT4WD LSD 3.92axle Dakota. I have gone through 5 tanks of gas and average about 14.6mpg (about 65%hwy 35%city). Max is about 14.9 (first tank driving like grandma) and minimum is 14.3 (my last tank driving and accelerating faster than before). I have no mods. I just bought a tonneau, but haven't yet installed it...that will hopefully help my mileage a little bit. I'm not really sure how to quantify the power, but I have no problems...on my dayly commute, there are about 3 areas where idiots always try to cut people off to get in front...nobody has been able to rocket in front of me so far if I tried not to let them...especially if it's from a stoplight. This is vastly different from my old Mazda Protege (I'd lose almost every time..hehe). Anyhow, I haven't hauled anything yet, but the acceleration rocks.

Message: PLL your milelage will probily get better after the truck has about 15,000 miles on it after it loosens up.
Getting power for the buck is my big issue. If I'm going to get 14.5 MPG I might as well have the power and acceleration that should go with it. After all my 3.9L Quad cab really doesn't have a passing gear, just a noise maker gear.

Message: I got an 04 Quad Sport plus 4x4 4.7 with 5 speed auto, 3.55 with about 14,100 miles now.
Normal driving is a 60/40 highway mix with lots of full throttle and normal highway cruising speeds of 80-85, with occasional bursts to over 90. In normal driving to and from work Im on the freeway for 5-10 minute short trips. I've been averaging 14.5-2.6, but Im sure 15 and over wouldn't be difficult if I could drive gentler.
On my last road trip first tank was all highway at 70-75. GOt 17.5. Next tank on the doad trip was about 260 miles of back country roads at a steady 45-55 with no lights followed by 100 miles was steady 70-75. Returned 17.8 mpg. Last tank was balls to the wall, full throttle, 85-90. Returned 16.3. Im SOOO SOO happy I bought the V8. You hear tons of people kicking themselves because they bought the V6 instead of the V8, but you never hear vice versa.

Message: Completely stock '01 CC SLT 4x4 4.7L 41,000 miles. For the past 2 years it's been getting 16 - 18.5 mpg 2 long road trips 850 miles round trip each daily driver max speed 60 mph rest of the route average 40 on twisting asphalt county roads.
A fair amount of hauling, 300 - 400 lbs to the dump 3/yr and a lot of tree/stump pulling and wood hauling none of which have ever hurt the truck. I've not had the suspension even drop 1/2 inch when I load this thing although it does get squirrely braking fully loaded.
Like Kowalski I drove the 3.9 6 cyl. and the V8 was hands down the winner.
You'll be very happy with the 4.7L V8!

Message: I also drove (owned since new) a 3.9L (98 rc auto 2wd 3:55 rear with a TON of mods) and my "new" 00 cc 4.7L auto 4x4 would stomp it!!! And my 00 is stock (except a dynomax super turbo muffler) my lil 3.9 was quick for a v6, but it dosent compete with my 4.7L. I find myself accidentally spinning the tires, on takeoffs now (3:55 lsd) there’s sooo much more torque now :-) and the exhaust note, dont get me started on that :-P
I haven’t really checked my mileage lately, but i would guess it’s in the 16-17 range)
In short GO FOR IT! You wont regret it.....

Message: Probably about 14 MPG city for my 03 QC 4X4 4.7 3.55's. I've got a company vehicle so I only drive my truck a few times a week after work and on weekends. So needless to say I romp it pretty damn hard when I DO drive it. Gets around 18 and even 19 on the highway. 11 to 12 hwy pulling a 12 foot trailer with quads.
going on 18k miles. Feels like it's starting to find new power. Got the cams and a few other mods so far. Nothing seemed to hurt mileage. But it sure shifts harder at WOT now with my mods and I got 5 speed auto. So there MUST be more power at redline than stock.

Message: My 03 QC 4x4 w/ 4.7L get around 15-15.8 in the city and 17.6-19.5 on the highway. I agree with what someone said earlier about as miles go on. Up thru about 8k I would only get mid 16's on the highway but for the last 5k (have 13k on truck now) I'm getting solidly in the 18's on a mix of 20% city and 80% highway.
I drive without a lead foot 99% of the time though, so results obviously will vary..

Message: The 3.9 was a good engine. I had one in a 90 Dak.
I now have a 4.7 in a 4X4 and there is power to
spare but the mileage is not the best but
remember, it's a truck.
Before you give up on the V6, test drive a Dak
with the new 3.7 V6. I did just a few weeks ago
and I was stunned with the power it had over the
old 3.9.
