Subject: cooling system question, strange problem

My truck almost overheated today, luckly i noticed the temp rise before it got too hot and shut it down. Now heres my question. The radiator was down about 3 quarts and needed to be filled for sure. Here is the strange part. The overflow bottle was grossly overfull. I also noticed that the tube that goes to the bottle was very loose where it connects to the radiator cap, there was nothign holding it on or sealing it. It seems to me that when the coolant heated up it flowed into the bottle like it should but because of the loose hose id wouldnt flow back in as it cooled. I checked the cap and it tests fine. does this make sense? I cant see anywhere else that the fluid coould have gone, i see no visible leaks and the system pressure tests fine. the fan clutch seems ok and the electric is working fine. The extra coolant in the bottle i find strange because i check it often and i have never had to add anything to it. the truck is a 02 qc 4.7 4x4. Thanks for any insight.

Makes sense. When it overheated, even with a loose hose, the expansion of the liquid drove it over into the jug despite the loose-fitting overflow hose. However, on cooldown, you had a vacuum leak, so it drew air into the radiator instead of coolant from the jug.

Get a tight fit on that hose and you should be fine.
