Message: I am just wondering what modifications would be needed to drop a Hemi crate engine in a Gen II Dakota besides the transmission and maybe the rear.

Message: From what I've heard so far, from a guy hoping to drop a 5.7 in a 1970 'Cuda, the minimum is the engine computer and fuel pump/tank. I don't know if there are any aftermarket intake manifolds yet where you could use a carb instead.

Message: Well, since the 426 Hemi is undoubtedly the greatest engine ever invented, i would. and ask Hot Rod magazine why they would go back to a carb to put the 528ci Hemi in the 02 Ram they built

Message: Right On, Spencer.. If you are a true gearhead, you use the best hardware for the situation, carb or fuelie. If its your vehicle and your bucks, who's right?

Message: Mopar Performance sells BOTH carb and fuel-injected manifolds for the 5.7HEMI. I own a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7, but thought about the 5.7Hemi, and did a search and talked to the dealer, who also did a search on the internet. There ARE a few brave men who have attempted this, but it involves CUTTING THE FRAME up front to get the engine to fit, not to mention needing to change the transmission. Pretty involved for my 4x4 pickup, as Im changing basically all the running gear...still a cool idea, because my Sport pkg truck handles SO well with its dual sway bars, and having Hemi-power in this chassis would be a hoot! My solution is to rebuild the 4.7 to the 350hp level (or add supercharger) and call it good.

Message: I have done engine swaps myself, with some planning, time and enough money just about anything can be done. I put a '75 500 cubic inch Caddy engine in a '77 Chevy pick up, I used the trans, that came with the engine, and it was a blast to drive. At 20 mph I could stomp the gas and the trans woulld shift down into 1st and smoke the right rear tire. I made my own motor/trans mounts. If there's not something already on the market, make it your self and see if some one would want to buy it from you. Just take a lot of pictures, of everything you do, and with any luck you may be able to sell your own kit. In the case of putting the Caddy into the pick up, there are a few kits out there, but I still did it myself. Another thing to remember, keeping your truck all Mopar, will make things a little easier, the same with, Ford all Ford, and GM all GM.
Good Luck

Message: I don't believe any cutting is necessary. Check out dakota-durango.com and do a search. Several people there have done the swap. The frame being too narrow is an internet myth.
