I have a 02 4x4 with the five speed auto trans.
I'm sure you guys with the same tranny know that
any kind of up grade on the road and it's in
over drive AND cruse control, it tends to
downshift more than we would like to see happen.
Has anyone played around with the idea of maybe
adding a switch (or whatever) to keep that
downshifting from happening? If so, I'd like to
hear your ideas on the subject..

Assuming nothing is wrong with your transmission, you need to figure out why its downshifting all the time. Perhaps you are in conditions where it shouldn't really be in O/D at all... consider turning O/D OFF and see if that improves the situation.
shiftin in/out of OD will wear out the OD components faster, and driving around town or towing stuff is probably the biggest reason for it shifting in and out.

If you turn the OD off the transmission will hang in the gears longer and stop the constant downshifting, but the truck won't go into OD and suck more gas. I keep the OD on for regular driving and turn the OD off while towing.
The only time I have a problem with the cruise control downshifting the transmission while in OD is on steep grades. To cure this, "assist" the cruise control by pushing the accelerator and keep the truck at speed through the grade. Normally, I only have to assist the cruise control at the beginning of the grade and the cruise can pull the rest of the hill. On real steep grades your going to be downshifting, but that would happen with or without the cruise control on.

my 00 QC 4.7 auto downshifts twice sometimes on quick altitude changes and lumbers along at 1800 rpm up long steep grades. Its really neat to lumber along at 1800 rpm while all the ricers that passed me on the straitaway are struggling to keep up on the grades.

someone had told me that I should keep the OD on while city driving and if i were to tow, the OD should be off. What's the deal??? Does having OD on all the time guzzle more gas??
I have a gen III 3.9L. auto.

While in overdrive it won`t guzzle more gas but may overheat the trans ,especially when towing. Ive read that the pumps in the trans don`t circulate as much in overdrive=less cooling. Or may cause excessive wear because of the trans hunting for gears in city driving.

the overdrive doesnt even engage below 30 or 35 does it? Anyway I leave my OD on 99% of the time and off when hauling or towing. As far as fuel economy its my impression that you save fuel with the OD engaged because the engine revs lower thereby saving fuel.

every single vehicle out there has an overdrive, including manuals, its just there so that when you tow stuff you can turn it off. it hits it around 45, anything below that its not engaged, thats the reason its there, to save gas.

My 00 CC 4.7L 4x4 auto lugs along fine on hills with cruise on (OD on, and under tq converter lockup)....
i'm not sure what trans I have though (in the glove box, it says 4 speed automatic. Then directly below that, it says multi speed automatic) I think I might have the 545rfe... I bought the truck used, and i dont have the window sticker. is there any way to know for sure?

Dan - you have the 45RFE tranny. The 545 was derived from that by adding another ratio with electronic switching. I've never heard any of us with the 45RFE complain about the tranny hunting gears as seems more common with the guys with the 545RFE.
Chris - you claim every vehicle has an overdrive; but I can't find it in my '69 Barracuda. Maybe you could explain ? ;-)
Deno24 - there's a few of us who tow with overdrive on; do you have the 4.7/4 speed automatic combination too ? Seems to work well, only going into overdrive in low load situations like going downhill.
