Subject: Fun with brakes... IP: Logged
Message: Decided to change my front brake pads today... started out normal. Got the tire off, pulled the caliper off, pulled off the pads which had quite a bit of life left, but I decided I wanted to change em anyway. Then we (my grandpa and I) took a look at my caliper. My piston was shot. It was cracked to hell and we were afraid it wouldn't seal if we compressed it back in so we put the brakes back together and decided we'd change em when I bought a new caliper. A storm was moving in so we took a break and waited for it to pass. Then we went out to work on the other side. We lost the damn torx45 bit and couldn't find it anywhere so we had to make a quick run to Ace Hardware and spend $6.20 on a new one. When we came back, we went and pulled the other tire off. While I was breaking the torx bolts free on the caliper, I learned a new lesson about socket wrenches. Don't have your head within reach of your arm as it breaks free...I popped myself right between the eyes with that damn socket wrench. I got me a nice lump now. Anyway... we pulled the pads off that caliper to find the piston on that side was shot as well. Same problem. We reassembled that side and we're gonna change em after we buy new calipers. I was wondering if this is a common problem or if there is a recall/TSB out on this problem? Surely that isn't very safe...if one of those cracks too much, it won't seal and then you're screwed when you hit the brakes and you barely have any...or if it leaks enough, you have none, period. The piston appeared to be made out of some plastic-like material. We also noticed that the brake shoes didn't have the proper shims on at all. Are the shims used to transfer heat and could they possibly be the cause of the shot pistons? I have never serviced my brakes until today and my truck only has 47,xxx miles on it...so I'm unsure if they've ever been serviced before. Some feedback would be nice...thanks for reading.

Message: sounds like fun... the hardest time i had with my brakes was the lugnuts!! my goodyear dealer, tightened the holy crap out of the lugs. i had to literaly jump up and down, on my 4 way tool to break them loose!!!! then i had to pry against the lower steering knuckle to get the discs off. my calipers were fine though. even with powerslots, the brakes were pretty crappy.... my new dak, is heavier and longer, but stops better than my rc 3.9 did with powerslots. my current dak has the stockers on (it has HD rear drums though)
