Subject: 3.9L to 5.2L swap? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '92 Dakota 2wd with a 3.9L Auto. I will soon be swaping the 3.9L with a new 5.2L. What will I need to do this swap. I know I will need a new computer for the 318, but what else is needed. The truck came equiped with a heavy-duty radiator, and a Mopar tech. told that it would work perfectly. I also have questions about the truck's current A-500 transmission. I have been told that the transmission would work with the 318, but I have also been told it would not, and I should go ahead and buy the A-518 transmission. Has anyone made a similar swap and if you did was you able to use the current transmission. I have also looked into swaping the 3.9 for a 300h.p. or 380h.p. Magnum crate motor. If I do this I will not use all of the electronics. If I do this what will I have to do to the wiring harness to make every thing work together. If drop in a crate motor I will use the stronger transmission. Would this be better than the 318 or would the 318 be the best choice. Also, will the crate engines work with fuel injection, etc?

Message: I have done the 3.9L to the 5.2L. I hade to change ALL engine and transmission wire harness, PCM. The 3.9L Trans WIL NOT WORK it will bolt up fine but its not built for the power of a V8. I believe the V6 has a 42RE trans and you need a 44RE. Also the fan, fan clutch, anf fan shroud wil have to be changed..... other than that is pretty simple.

Message: I have a 1997 fullsize Ram with the 3.9/5 speed. I want to take this 3.9 out and put a 5.2 in it, but I'm not sure what I would have to change...I saw the above posts mention things like the transmission and fan and wiring harnesses needing to be changed, but would I be able to get away with putting a 5.2 and it's own 5 speed in the place of my 3.9 setup, and only have to change the wiring and maybe the shroud and fan? What do you guys think? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Message: Can anyone tell me, I have an 88 Dakota with a 3.9 V6. What will I need to change, as it is not fuel injected, is it easier to swap?
Do I need a new tranny, wiring harness? Any good websites out there on the subject or parts?

Message: A few years ago I swapped the blown motor
out of my Jeep Commanche pickup and
replaced it with a 428 super cobra jet motor
from an old mustang. It would spin the rear
tires a 50 mph. Only problem was the
commanche radiator was way to small for that
motor. I had one built but it still always ran hot
on 90+ degree days. But it was fun to drive.
I guess my point is any motor will go into any
truck If you can put a ford motor into a jeep.
