How do I determine if my 2001 Dak Quad Cab has the 9 1/4 inch rear end or the 8 1/4? I do not want to tear my rear end apart and measure the ring gear. I can tell you that I have the 4.7 w/heavy duty service group and towing package. It has the 3.55 gear ratio and tire option. It is an slt plus with the a/trans. The rear end looks huge. It looks like a full size truck axle. The diff cover has 4 flats top bottom and each side/

If you have 3.55 it is 8.25 and 3.92 is 9.25

If you have a V8 you have a 9.25 even if you have 3.55 gears.

I have a 97 w/ the tow and tire pkg. My rear end is a 8.25 with 3.55 ratio (auto). I know this because I went to the dealer and got a report of ALL the option on my truck (per the VIN).

I was stating the way it is for the 2001 models. I don't know what they did in '97.

It should say on a tag on the axle itself. This tag should give the size, ratio, and whether or not you have the LSD. There should also be a sticker in your glove box that will say if you have the 9 1/4. Mine is a 9 1/4, and it's a 2000 CC 4X4 with the tow package and 31 inch wheel and tire package. I'm not sure exactly what option package or combination of options gives you the 9 1/4 vs the 8 1/4.

IT`s real easy to tell, first the 8 1/4 has 10 bolts holding the insection pan and its oval in shape the 9 1/4 has 12 bolts and its shape is like a big circle with the corners cut off,jus bend down and take a look

If it's V-8 equipped then it's most likely you have the 9.25 regardless of ratio. Like the previous post stated check for 12 bolts and kind of like a fat octagon shape.

Surprise to me, yep my axle has a little tag on it stating 9.25 N-Trak and 3.55 Trak-Lock... learn something new every day. Mine's a 2001 with a 4.7L V8.

I have a 97 with the 8.25----3.55 LSD---5.2 I know this
1: 10 Bolts
2: The dealer VIN report said it is a 8.25.
But, they still can't figure out what front diff I have........go figure!

The most important thing is.....I'm getting a 3.73
