Subject: Mobil 1 Oil Change Interval IP: Logged
Message: Ok...So I'm using Mobil 1 5w30 Syn. oil and a mobil 1 oil filter, and I am wondering how ofter other Dakota R/T owners are changing their oil.
I just read the study that is comparing mobil 1 to amsoil to other oils.
Based on the Mobil 1 test, I could go up to 12,000 miles just before changing the filter.
I'm considering waiting til 10,000 before just changing both (oil and filter).
Anyone have any experience or comments on this?

Not all oils are the same ... not all engines perform the same (even using the same oil) ... therefore, depending upon your engine, your driving habits, and your climate ... your oil will perform differently than the next guys ... so don't set your oil change intervals based simply upon someone else's results.
Normal Driving Conditions or Severe Driving
Mobil1 has the appropriate additive base to be easily changed at 5,000 mile intervals under NORMAL driving conditions.
Severe Driving = Pedal to the Metal Driving - City Driving - Stop-and-Go in bumper-to-bumper Driving - Crowded downtown Conditions - Weather ... as in Extreme Heat or Extreme Cold --- Engine Condition --- Towing a Trailer --- Hilly or Mountain Conditions --- all affect the life expectancy of an oil. If you believe that you vehicle operates under severe driving conditions I would change every 3k -4k miles.
If most of your miles are highway miles and do not fall under the above conditions --- you could go further between changes.
Performing a Used Oil Analysis will help you to determine your particular engines optimum oil change interval.

What is Oil Analysis?
Oil analysis involves sampling and analyzing oil for various properties and materials to monitor wear and contamination in an engine, transmission or hydraulic system. Sampling and analyzing on a regular basis establishes a baseline of normal wear and can help indicate when abnormal wear or contamination is occurring.
Oil analysis works like this. Oil that has been inside any moving mechanical apparatus for a period of time reflects the exact condition of that assembly. Oil is in contact with engine or mechanical components as wear metallic trace particles enter the oil. These particles are so small they remain in suspension. Many products of the combustion process also will become trapped in the circulating oil. The oil becomes a working history of the machine.
Particles caused by normal wear and operation will mix with the oil. Any externally caused contamination also enters the oil. By identifying and measuring these impurities, you get an indication of the rate of wear and of any excessive contamination. An oil analysis also will suggest methods to reduce accelerated wear and contamination.
The typical oil analysis tests for the presence of a number of different materials to determine sources of wear, find dirt and other contamination, and even check for the use of appropriate lubricants.
Oil analysis can detect: Fuel dilution of lubrication oil, Dirt contamination in the oil, Antifreeze in the oil, Excessive bearing wear, Misapplication of lubricants.
Some wear is normal, but abnormal levels of a particular material can give an early warning of impending problems and possibly prevent a major breakdown.
Early detection can: Reduce repair bills, Reduce catastrophic failures, Increase machinery life, Reduce non-scheduled downtime.
Early detection with oil analysis can allow for corrective action such as repairing an air intake leak before major damage occurs. Probably one of the major advantages of an oil analysis program is being able to anticipate problems and schedule repair work to avoid downtime during a critical time of use.
Another purpose of oil analysis is to provide a means of predicting possible impending failure without dismantling the equipment. A person can "look inside" an engine, transmission or hydraulic systems without taking it apart.

Once you order the "sampling kit" follow the directions very close so as to NOT contaminate the sample. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

I could go on-and-on about the merits and benefits of oil analysis. Entire phamplets have been written on the subject. However, the proper lab will do the dirty work and provide you with a "bottom line" interpretation.

For the Record, a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) is a trend analysis "per vehicle" and reports will be different "per vehicle". You can not compare across brands or between vehicles.
Oil analysis can detect:

Misapplication of lubricants

In conclusion, UOA's are not beneficial in determining "which brand of oil is best" ... only helpful for your own personal vehicle. Early detection with oil analysis can allow for corrective action.

Message: That filter is on there for a reason. I guess it's all a matter of how safe you feel that an oil filter can last 10,000 miles which is a loooooooong time and continue to filter metals, etc. anything else. I wouldn't do it. I bought a Dakota for roughly $19,000, I dont' mind buying a few $5 filters throughout the year for it.

Message: I talked to Mobil 1 they told me that you can change the oil once a year with unlimited miles. I change my oil every 7500 miles and filters every 3750 miles. The key is keeping the oil clean so change the filter, it's not expensive to do. If you plan to run your oil changes to 10,000 miles change the filter at 5,000 miles.

Message: I've been using Mobil1 with oil & filter changes at 5000 mile intervals on several vehicles with good results (so far). 5000 is a good round number and if you do it every time your ODO hits a 5000 multiple, you'll never have to remember again when to change it. Odo hits 20000, 45000, or 85000 miles - change it. You get the idea.

I change my oil filter every six months or every 12,500 miles
(whichever comes first).
I have never been able to get close to the Amsoil 25,000 mile or
one-year change interval, but I did manage to put almost
21,000 miles on Amsoil one time and did an oil analysis and the
oil was still fine according to the lab.
At one time (1978) Mobil1 actually had brochures that claimed
there oil had a 25,000 mile or one-year oil change interval but
you don't see them making that claim anymore (I guess it cut
into their profits).
Mobil1 can be used for 7,500 miles with no problems but I know
for a fact that Amsoil has a much better additive package and
cost you much less to use due to the increase in fuel economy
that most folks usually experiance.

Mobil1 is a FINE PRODUCT ... I would simply like to point out their misleading advertisment slogan ... "Nothing Outperforms Mobil1". I can think of three or four synthetic oils that outperform Mobil1. To name a few ... Shell Rotella is excellent, Mobil Delvac 1 is excellent, Schaeffer's is excellent, ... and the new Mobil1 formula is better than the old but still needs improvement.
Mobil1 is a very good oil, however in some engines it does not do very well because of it's thinner nature. In those engines a different synthetic would show better wear numbers. While I do think Mobil1 is too thin for some engines, it can be thickend up by adding a qt. of 15w-50. I think for high performance vehicles, Amsoil has more to offer, and isn't your Dakota a PERFORMANCE TRUCK?
If you want to keep your truck for a long time (150k - 300k miles on your engine), you want to pick the synthetic that shows you the lowest engine wear, and in many cases, Mobil1 is just too thin for certain engines to show their best wear results.
Using Amsoil, you MAY notice: an increase in engine performance, better MPG and engine smoothness, longer engine life, ... AND you will help "Save The Environment" by using less oil with extended (longer) oil change intervals.

Message: So, what kind of Mobil 1 products are you guys referrin to? I use the regular synthetic Mobil 1 and is my waiting to change my oil until 4500 miles too long? If Im the normal Schedule B driver, how long can I push this oil before it needs to be changed? Im tryin to figure out if I need to start usin the Extended Performance oil.

Message: During the vehicle warranty period, change the oil per the appropriate maintenance schedule as determined by the manufacturer. That's the best way to avoid warranty claim issues if something goes wrong inside your engine.
When your warranty expires, you're pretty much free to do whatever oil change interval you want.
I use Mobil-1 0W-30 (not a true synthetic, but close) in my 4.7L, and a WIX 51773 oil filter, which is more than twice as big as OEM oil filter, and replace the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I could go longer between changes, but I do a lot of short trips (10 miles or less), which contaminates the oil real fast because it doesn't get much time at operating temperature.

Message: Well, I finally got the guy at Mobil 1 to open up to me. he said that no matter how I drive, whether it falls under Scedule A or B of the maintenence intervals, I can use the classic Mobil 1 full synthetic for up to 6000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. He said that if I want to go over that, I should use the Extended Performance. But I found out something in my owners manual. It says that under no circumstances should I exceed 6000 miles between intervals. This is for a 2004 Dodge Dakota, I dont know what you guys's manual says, but Id rethink some of these 15000 and 24000 mile oil changes.

for city driving or stop and go it is much less
for both. approx 7500 and 12000 respectively

Message: Well whatever, Im not guna argure with you. My manual says under no circumstances should oil change intervals go over 6000 miles. Now, it doesnt specify which type of oil you are using, whether you are using plain-jane petroleum oil or synthetic oil so in my book, I have to assume the manufacturer doesnt care what type of oil you are using. It just says you shouldnt go over 6000 miles between oil change intervals.
But whatever, Im not guna tell you how to do your oil changes. All Im sayin is until I find some real proof that its OK to go that long on oil changes with no matter what oil you are using, Im not going to push my oil that long.
Oh, and I did look at the back of the bottle. It doesnt say anything about how many miles it will go. It just says "Outstanding performance during the maximum oil change interval recommended in your owners manual."

Message: Well, I find that hard to believe because I was always told if you are using plain jane petroleum oil, it needs to be changed every 3000 miles, no matter how you drive. Besides, if you follow the Sched A or Sched B maintenence schedule, almost 90% of drivers on the road today follow under Sched B. I mean, you cant drive in a climate over 90 degrees or under 32 degrees if you want to be under the schedule a maintenence cycle.

Message: I would try the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and an Amsoil filter and change them both at 10,000. At 5,000 miles I would change the filter and add a quart of make up oil.

Message: Egh, I'll just leave it alone and do like what the guy at Mobil 1 told me and run the ordinary synthetic to 6000 and change it. Call me cautious, but I dont feel comfortable with goin over 6000 mile oil changes. I think I'll be fine with the Fram Extended Guard filter thats good for 7500 miles.

Message: Yeah, Ive heard from several people that Fram filters arent all that great, but they arent bad enough to hurt anything.
How long are Amsoil and Mobil 1 oil filters good for? Are they meant to be an extended life filter other than just being a better quality filter? I used to use the Mobil 1 filter but I quit using them because I didnt know if they were only meant to be changed with a regular oil change of 3000 miles.

Message: After the break-in period I changed to Mobil1 and a Fram filter. The truck now has 98,000 miles on it.
How much longer should I go before changing the oil again. It sounds good and runs good. I'm a little worried about the filter but the oil looks ok.
