Subject: AMSOIL GUY QUESTION IP: Logged
Message: I keep having a problem with noises in my rear diff on my 1999 4x4 with LSD. I noticed a grinding type noise after taking off from a stop on a hill on making a sharp turn, usually after truck has been driven several miles. I changed fluid with amsoil 75w-90 oil and added a bottle of limited slip additive, it didnt help. I then drained oil out, refilled with amsoil 75w-90 and then added mopar antifriction modifier. This worked fine for a couple hundred miles and now is back.
My question is do you think if I used a heavier wt oil that it might help since it seems to be a heat related problem. thanks........

dakdann,
Good Question, but I don't know if a heaver wt. will solve the problem. Seems to me a lot of Dakota's have a differential noise problem.
Perhaps the most talked about problem with Dakotas, after the "ball joint problem", is "noise coming from the differential". I believe there may have been some Dealer TSB's and Recalls but I am not certain. I have seen mention of them, and perhaps you can find your answer if you search this site.
Sorry, but I recommend a heaver wt. oil when the vehicle is used for towing, not to cover up the noise from a manufacturer defect.
