Conclusion, if you got the bucks to buy a car/truck and the bucks for a computer with internet access, then you surely can aford the few it costs for a carfax.
one more thing, I bought a car from a dealer for my kid last winter, carfax report was wrong as I did a DMV report on the title and found an owner that was not listed, nor does it have any of the 3 wrecks my kids put on the Omni, so I would not depend on them as being a full history of the vehicle, only what carfax reporting agencies have on it.

seems like a joke to me
never once in my four decades of being alive have i felt the need
to have a carfax done on a vehicle purchase

Yeah, I used it once and got a clean report. Took the vehicle to a mechanic and found major damage that wasn't reported. If it wasn't reported to them it's not going to show up. Save your money. I believe NADA guides does a similar service for free.
