Subject: Shock/suspension upgrade: KYB vs Rancho?
IP: Logged

Message:
Don't want to spend more than ~$60 or so per shock, and this is going on my 2001 Dak QC 4x4 4.7L. I want to keep stock ride height, and this truck sees light off-road duty, and more paved roads. Any other suggestions? I hear Hotchkis a lot, but I think it's a bit out of my price range (I think they go for ~$85/shock, is it that much better?). Anyhow, thinking of leaning towards KYB Monomax vs. Rancho RS5000 (I don't think I need adjustability of RS9000)...

I'd like to also change over to polyurethane bushings--any opinions and sources to buy with these?

My plan is to try to eliminate all clunking/squeaking, tighten up the handling, but keep her 'off-road' capable for light duty; I will be replacing the lower/upper ball joints with some Moogs too while I'm at it...Thanks for your help!

Personally I have been using the Edlebrock ISAs for a couple of years now and I am completely happy with them. Great on the roads, nice and smooth but can absorb the hits in light off road cases.

I have used RS5000's for a couple of years now. A vast improvement in handeling over stock, with a slightly increased harshness. Here in the west (CO), it's a decent trade off, as the road quality is good. I was back east last week where the road quality isn't very good (PA, NY, MA). The ride was definatly on the rough side. If I lived there I would be lookin for a better shock.

I have the Edlebrock ISAs on my 01 Club Cab 4x4 and love them. Much stiffer than stock but the ride doesn't suffer at all. As for the bushings, try truckperformance.com I've seen them there but for the rear only I believe.

Another vote for the Edlebrock IAS shocks. Put em in a week and a half ago, nice improvement. Spend the extra $10.00 per shock. I got mine for $69.00 a piece and free shipping from AJUSA.com.

PS: I only used the aluminum spacer supplied for the fronts on the drivers side. The passenger side looked like it would push it too close to the upper A-arm. No clearance issues with just using the one spacer.

I replaced my OEM shocks with Rancho RS5000. In less then 6,000 miles they were shot. The ride was stiffer then I wanted and I experienced some handling problems (most likely due to the shocks wearing out so quickly).

I switched to Monroe Reflex and I now have my "like new" comfort ride back and handling is as good as ever.

I understand that the Monroe Reflex and the Rancho RSX are about the same and made by the same company.

I do moderate offroading and lots of highway driving.

Check out DriverFX

I find very good prices on this site.

I put in KYBs about a year ago. Great improvement over stock. They are similiar in valving to Edelbrocks IAS (through description, I never tried Edelbrocks). Sorry, I don't much about Ranchos but I thought they were good off road shocks. Also, I don't go off roading so I have that experience. Good luck.
