Message: Ill help... I had some tech school trainging in HP drivetrains.. first question is obvious.. how much do you intend to spend? replacing will be easier, faster, but more expensive...
second Q is what the F happened to cause your tranny to fail in the first place? IF it's just a cracked gear or more likely just replaceable parts, like the synchronizers wearing out, then replace the failed parts and slammer back in...it'll take about a week to complete the rebuild at a shop. If it shedded parts like the gears, causing metal shards to spread throughout the tranny, then its a loss. you'd be better to swap it out. haven't heard of any aftermarket trannys that are a direct swap, so you'd probably be replacing it with an identical unit.
3, done much to modify the engine? if its mostly stock, then a stock replacement will work fine...
4. do you plan on doing the work yourself, or having a shop do it? you can save money on a rebuild if you remove it and deliver the unit to them...
5..how much do you plan on spending? a repeat, yes, but that is the main important thing you need to be considering... Check with a few shops, see how long they'll take, check out their shops, INVESTIGASTE. see if they offer any type of warranty to their work. compare prices of a rebuild to a replacement this may be fairly close.... you may be able to find a decent used one in a low mileage truck at a salvage yard for a decent price.
I hope this helps, I've set this to send me an email, if you have any other questions I might be able to help with, just post a response...
