Subject: clunking felt through the steering wheel IP: Logged
Message: The clunking at start and stop felt through my steering wheel (and audible to the passanger) has now become intermittant! Sometimes I can drive all day and not hear it and then it's back with a vengence!

Message: What year is your truck? 4x4,4x2? Is the clunking more pronounced in warmer weather and in stop and go traffic for an extended time? Mine was and it was the intermediate shaft in the rack and pinion. 03 qc 4x4. Plus I think it`s coming back.

Message: Either the steering rack is getting sloppy or the upper a-arm bushings are toast. Jack the front end up and try to push the wheels back and forth, like your trying to turn the steering wheel with the tire. You will feel it if there is slop in the steering rack, if you don't it's probably the a-arm bushings.

Message: I had this as well on an '03. Dealership thought it was the aftermarket shocks I put on. They said they tightened them and wouldn't charge me. Thanks guys. I found it was the intermediate steering shaft. Do you get a clunk felt in the steering wheel when you accel/decel? Take the intermediate shaft out and grease the telescoping part heavily under the rubber boot. That fixed it for me. I think it's too close to the exhaust manifold...
