hey guys hows it going not so good here i just got done checkin the lower ball joints in my 97 dakota ext cab 4x4 and there shot. i was wondering if someone could tell me if i have to replace the whole lower control arm or if the lower ball joint its self could be replaced. i hope the ball joint its self can cause i'm sure the control arm ain't cheap. and some tips on how to do would be nice if you've got any. i'd like to do it myself to save $$ but whatever i have to do i will thanks guys please reply soon...

I changed the ball joints on my old S10. If these are similar they are rivited in and the rivets will have to be ground off. The new Mogul's (Buy Federal Mogul's) will use nut's and bolts supplied with the ball joints.
Like I said this was with an S10 so take a look for rivets. That job was an SOB to do. Best thing to do is get a shop or Haynes manual for your truck it explains all the steps. Hell I even changed the clutch on my 98 4x4 club cab reading manuals and did a great job allthough moving that huge transmission and transfer case back took some creativity.

Ya you can replace them,like jeff was sayin if they are riveted you gota grind em off,it easy if you have a ball joint press,I have one but they are pretty expensive or you can rent one, you can also make a tool with some pipe and a BIG c-clamp or bang them down with a hammer except this can wreck them when bangin them back in,the biggest thing make SURE you have a jackstand under the control arm before you do this or your gonna get hurt

I think I pounded mine back in. I was very young and broke and had to do whatever it takes to keep it rollin. I guess nothing has changed except I have a real truck now. LOL

hey guys thanks for the help but i went to the dealer ship today where i got my truck and talk to the service maneger and they are going to replace the ball joints for free. so if your having problems w/ them take it back to the dealer and see what they'll do fro ya. thanks again for the help.
