Subject: YOU PROBABLY HAVE WATER UNDER UR CARPET!
IP: Logged

Message:
Warm weather is back and if you have AC it probably is leaking under your front passenger floorboard. You won`t notice for a while because there is foam padding under there that keeps it from soaking through right away. I had this problem in mine last July. I wouldn`t have thought to look myself except for reading about it on this site. The dealer claimed there was an obstruction and clearing it solved the problem. I told them that the drain tube should have an elbow and short piece added (see link below) to solve the problem. They said it was redesigned and they can`t alter it without DC`S approval. I was skeptical and sure enough there is a puddle under there again. I checked it periodically all winter and no water,so I know it isn`t coming from the outside.

I am convinced that if you check your truck and you don`t have water your the exception not the rule. A police detail showed up with an 03 4.7 8800 miles and for the heck of it I checked his, puddle. My neighbor down the street with an 02 3.9 17k,puddle. Co-worker with an 00 4.7 60k,his neglected truck was soaked right through,no need to check under carpet. It has to be very common.

Pull up the plastic strip thats under your front passenger door(just pry it up by hand evenly,it pops right back when your done)and reach under and check.

I know there have been a ton of posts on this(just do search, type in "water floorboard")but the guy down the street was at this site before he bought his truck and he didn`t notice any posts on this issue. Him and the police detail were very surprised and upset about this. They were also very grateful I took the time to show them. We exchanged numbers to see how each of us makes out at the dealer.

I am going to check other Dakotas when I get the chance and post here when I do. If you find water in yours or find it in anybody else`s please post it here.

I`ll be bumping this thread for a while if I have to just to keep people aware of this problem. I will also post any results as far as a fix by the dealer.

Wouldnt you notice that theres water inside without even checking it? I'm not doubting you, and there may be water on my floor too, but wouldnt the windows fog up inside the car? I havent had any foggy windows, so I will check my floor but Im guessing that it will be dry.

Me and the people I checked with had no clue. My windows like to fog up,but not enough to cause alarm. The carpet and foam hide it quite well actually. You will eventually notice, but your warranty might be up by the time it does depending how much you drive. Also if you don`t use the AC much it could take a while. It might cycle too if the AC is used rarely getting a little wet and drying over the winter. I just can`t put it down to dumb luck that the few I checked all had water.

I was aware of the issue but didnt have any idea it was that common. Count me as an exception to the rule - mine's dry.

Definitely check the archives here. There have been several threads on the leakage problems. If I recall correctly, here is what I read:

o Current Gen Daks have a problem with either; the AC drain tube getting pinched and allowing AC drain to leak back; one of the body seams wasn't sealed correctly; center stop light leak.
o Previous Gen Daks have problems with body seam leaks, rear window leaks, and HVAC case leaks.

Note the above are generalities, and some exceptions did occur.

My 02 QC had the pinched AC drain line last spring. It took 3-4 trips to the dealer before they finally pulled the HVAC core, found the drain tube pinch, trimmed the interior padding to not pinch the tube, added a new drain tube seal, and buttoned it back up again. Been dry since.

Water in floorboard...Been there done that!

Your water is most likely coming from either a bad windshield seal (top outer corners is where the water enter, I filled the openings in the corners using some silicone and my water leaks stopped immediately)

or A/C evaporator drain located on the passenger side in the firewall where the evaporator drains (that water you see dripping below your truck on a hot day while the A/C is running). You can get a rubber turn down tube from your dealer for a few bucks and RTV it onto the tube. This prevents that water from being blown back while driving down the road.

I got my truck back about a week ago. They cut away the shield covering the AC drain and added a 3/4 tube extending out so it won`t hit the exhaust when it drains. They also siliconed around where the tube comes through the firewall. No elbow with an extension though. Oh well, they got it half right anyway. I just hope the water won`t blow back in without the elbow. Been too cool to run the AC lately so I don`t know if this is going to work. I may add an elbow myself in the mean time.

Good post Jeremiah.

So far I've been rarely running my A/C and I live in PHEONIX!

But, I drive a company vehicle and like to drive my own truck with the windows down if it's not TOO hot.

Something to think about is that HUMIDITY level will have an impact on who gets more water than others. Here in AZ it;s not TOO humid at all in early summer. But July and September is a whole diff story. That's when we see A/C water leaks. (I'm a A/C tech, but not on cars.)

Different climates have diff levels of humidity and run time for the A/C's. The more you run it and the more the humidity, the more WATER will condensate from the air and drain from the evap coil.

Keep us updated Jeremiah. I've only ran my A/C like twice this year so far, so I'm not going to bother lifting the carpet.

But as I drive it more and more with the A/C (on weekends) and take a long drive I'll be sure to chek it out!

Had mine in the shop the other day for this problem the dealer said that they performed
TSB 24-65-24-92 the ticket I got also says they performed TSB 23-010-04. I think all they did was to replace that foam seal between the A/C drain and the cowl. I am dring my carpet right Know and I will see if the water comes back in a week or so. I will keep you posted!

Can this happen to Gen 2 Dakotas? I have a 93 Club Cab Dak with a 318 and I have been noticing that the carpet is wet under my floor mat on the drivers side, but not the passenger side. Is this the same problem?

Ive had this problem and solved it before.

It happens to 3.9 v6 more than v8s for some odd reason. By primarily because of evaporator coil placement. Long story short the problem is clogged drain tube from the Evap Coil. During very humid days with long use of AC you will get a puddle from the spill over. Have your dealership clean your coil and tube before summer rolls around and this will never happen to you. It will also prevent the rotting out of your coil and the stagnant water smell you get from your HVAC. If your coil rots out it will spill over your blower motor and blow it up. $800 fix at dealership if you want to know. Basically dodge never fixed this problem, and waited for 2005 re-design to address it. This is why your AC unit is covered in your 7/70 warranty as of 2002. Pre 2002 your screwed. Clean coil and drain tube is a $30 job at most dealerships.

HOWEVER! Most 97-99 Daks will flood the passenger side floorboards if you deep puddle it, there is a fault in the floor which will allow water in when submerged. Keep this in mind.

So for the sake of you wallet and your sanity just have your evaporator coil and drain tube cleaned by the Dealership! If this ever rots out it may save your butt $800.

Well if that is a REAL TSB it did not work. I dried out the carpet and drove it for a week with no rain or washings and whatdo know the water returned. Taking it back to the dealer next week. We'll see what they say!

Well I checked under my carpet the other day and it was dry as a bone for the first time since I bought it. Hopefully the tube and silicone fix(without the elbow)will hold up.

When I first got my truck in august '02, I was driving it for about a week and I live in Florida and it gets pretty hot and humid. So I'm driving and it starts to smell, I don't pay any attention to it. But then one day one of my friends decides to clean the passenger floor board and when she picks it up there is about a 1"-2" puddle of water under there. So I take it back to dodge, and they said it was the evaporator drain hose, it was kinked. Haven't had a problem since.

Have a '98 V-6 extended cab and I found that the water on the passenger floorboard came from the body underneath the BACK window. The water was coming in from the vertical body seam thats about 5 inches in on the passenger's side. Sealed it with silicone.
