Subject: Loud Pop, Then Black Smoke IP: Logged
Message: This is what happened yesterday on my drive home. I was cruising at about 60 mph, when I heard a pop (firecracker) and then a cloud of black smoke came out of my exhaust. I lost a lot of power, I got it on to some side streets to get out of traffic. When I got back onto a stretch of road and put the pedal to the floor, nothing. It took forever to get to 3000 rpm, and then it wouldn't get much past there. I have a 5 spd, so I downshifted to seee if that would help, no, the truck started shaking and sputtering until it got back below 3000 rpm. My dak also sounded like a ricer under acceleration. I have a stock exhaust system. One other thing, usually my cai will whistle when I punch the gas, but under smooth acceleration its quiet. My cai kept whistling very loud any time my foot touched the pedal. I have 107,000 miles on my 97 dak. I read some posts on a clogged cat, but nowhere did I see anything about the pop or black smoke. I really hope it is just a cat, but I was wondering if it sounded like anything more serious to you guys. Thanks in advance.

Message: I loved the Blues Bros.
One thing that was B.S. was they THREW A ROD yet kept running from the police for a LONG time after and even jumped a bridge!
Those 440's were tough, but DAMN!
If you threw a rod and it busted out the side of the block OIL would be all over and you would see BLUE smoke. You should also hear LOTS of racket and wouldn't get too far.
The timing chain jumping a tooth or two would cause the loss in power problems, but no bang and no whistle. We may need more info ont this one.
The whistle is throwing me.

Message: the confusing thing is, first he talks about his truck, then changes the subject to his cai, whatever that is. I wondered if it might be a mis-key on his keyboard but even on a kevorkian board the i is not next to the r so he is not spelling car as cai, so cai must be something new.

Message: CAI=Cold Air Intake, sorry for the confusion. Anyway the reason I started talking about my cold air intake, is because I was hoping that it might help someone give me an answer. I didn't throw a rod, because I've been driving it all day. No oil, just still no power. Today its better, but it's still horrible. At wot, sorry wide open throttle, it sounds like sh*t. I'm getting under it tonight to check for holes in the exhaust. I don't know, and I'm just thinking of anything it could possibly be.

Message: Sounds like you cat is shot. I had one do the same thing to a ranger i had. The "whistling" is the sound of the exhaust going through a "clogged" cat converter. When you remove it, it will sound as if it is full of large rocks. The black smoke was soot that had built up over the years and when the filament broke the soot went out the pipe. Change the cat and you'll be as good as new.

Message: Got under my truck and there was a hole in the side of the cat. Thank god, I was scared. To turn some lemons into lemonade, I am ordering my new cat and Borla Turbo muffler later on today. Hooray for me.

Message: Thanks for the feedback. I've exploded a muffler before, but never a cat, so that's a new one for me too. Man I bet that was one helluva bang!

Message: 107,000. That warranty is bullsh*t. I got my Dakota in 97. The first cat went out at around 20,000 miles, it was replaced. I figured new cat, new warranty...wrong. It went out at 45,000 and I got the bill. The next two came out of my pocket as well. I am debating on whether or not to lose the cat, or go with an aftermarket one. I have to make up my mind, because come tomorrow morning I am ordering my new exhaust.

Message: What I'm wondering is what are you running through your Dak to make it eat CAT's like that? The only thing I can think of is very low grade and drity gas.

Message: Actually, I run high octane gas, with a bottle of treatment every oil change (3000 miles). Live on a farm we have Premium Amoco in our fuel tanks. My cousin has a 2000 Dakota and hasn't had any problems with cats on his truck, and he probably drives his harder than mine. It is not the fuel.

Message: Perhaps it's in the fuel tanks your have. How old are they? There could be some seepage from the groud. Or, there could also be some rust mixing with the fuel within the tanks. Have you ever gotten those tanks tested? Just wondering dont mean to piss you off or anything.

Message: All of our tanks are inspected at the beginning of each farm season. We run our own eighteen wheelers, so the deisel has to be clean. The gas tanks are checked as well. My dad, two uncles, and cousin all run their trucks off the gas at the farm, and no one has had the problems I've had. Just my luck I guess.

Message: In that case then, I would say run without a cat then. You must just have one of those dirty running Dak's then. No shame in that.
