Subject: Tires and MPG?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just swapped my 255 65 16 for 245 75 16. Just wondering what kind of effect this would have on my MPG. I was averaging 19.5, and now it has dropped to 16.9. Would the change of size on the tires cause this kind of drop? or is there another problem that is just starting to show, and this is just a coincidence?

Thanks.

What is the tread style of the new tires. If it is an aggressive style traction that could do it. Though 2.6 mpg drop seems like alot. What is your dak?

It's a 2001 3.9 v6. Went from the stock goodyear's to a pirelli scorpion at. So it is a pretty agressive tire.

I lost 1.5MPG switching from the stock Goodyear to a Cooper Discoverer ST.

More aggressive = less MPG

The taller tire takes more power to turn and it also changes your speedo calibration too.

Good point - you're now covering more ground with those taller tires and probably not factoring that into your milage. I'd expect your now effectively taller gearing to actually help milage unless you don't have a v-8.

I thought taller tires have less rolling resistance.
