Subject: 1source auto warranty? IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone have extended warranty through this company? I have a 02 X-Cab 4x4 and am thinking about buying a warranty through this group. The plan I was looking at covered most major components, engine, tranny, suspension(ball joints), axles, steering, and other items. It has a $100 deductible and covers for 5 years or 100,000 miles. The cost was $879. Let me know what you think of this warranty or others that you have had good luck with. Thanks.

Message: IT IS NOT A WARRENTY BUT A "SERVICE AGREEMENT" donot waste your money! 70 percent of the cost of one of those is profit. so over the time it takes effect mostly you will have only about 150 worth of covered repair and with a 100 deductable that comes out to 929 out of your pocket and you only get reimbursed for 50 bucks, bad deal all around.

Message: I have Warranty Direct,4 year,100k,bumper to bumper,no deductible, can pick your mechanic. It cost around $1400.00 though. They are underwritten in the US and have a high rating. The local repair shop I would use after the manufacturers warranty is up has dealt with them. His only complaint was they take too long on the phone to get info, but they pay up.

Message: Thanks for the opinions of the people on this board. I guess like any insurance, you are gambling that you will use it to make it worth the money. I have heard people say the 4.7 engine replacement would be $3000-$4000 and many people have paid $800-$1000 to have their ball joints replaced. Not to mention transmissions and rearends. I think for a little piece of mind, the $800 is well spent.

Message: I bought mine for peace of mind. ugh thought 1400 is a lot. If me and johnhankel have six repairs I will have spent less if you count the deductibles. Semantics I know,it`s just what you feel comfortable with. I believe that it would be a lot smarter to just put the money in a separate account for when you need repairs. I fear that I wouldn`t be that disciplined however.

Message: i got the extended DC warranty thru my dealer. good to do in my opinion because there's no reimbursement hassle, i can call a number and ask if a certain repair or part is covered, the dealer's labor is higher than most shops but its covered so i dont care, and at my local dealer they always seem give one post-warranty "courtesy coverage" for a major repair (free new shortblock on my family's caravan, etc).
the price has been worth it at least in my case, if you add up some of the repairs i've had - belt tensioner, power steering pump, all the control arm bushings, balljoints, etc. all those were mostly labor, but i only paid my deductible.
yes, i got new balljoints under my ext warranty, mine were torn and i missed the recall by not having a 4x4.
:)
anyway, just another viewpoint - my 2 cents.

Message: I have an '02 Mercury Mountaineer which has 58,400. Are there any dependable companies out there that offer decent extended warranties on used vehicles? Looking for a good warranty is like working a full time job!

Message: These warranties are not generally considered a good value. They are simply a way to make money for the companies that offer them. Many look for any oportunity to deny a claim - a little late on your last oil change - sorry, warranty no longer valid. After taking a pass on these warranties for the many vehicles I've owned, I'm now many thousands of dollars better off than if I had wasted my hard earned money on these warranties.

Message: I'm sure everyone has had different experiences, but I got a 3 yr 36,000 one for $1300 on my used 2001 Durango R/T that had 92,000 miles on the ticker. After only about driving 75 miles the tranny went out and it cost $1950 to rebuild. (the stealer wanted $4600) They agreed to pay $1,600 of it so I came out ahead. I also had one for my 99' Dakota R/T that I purchased when I bought ($980) it and it too has more than paid for itself (AC compressor replaced ,broken gears in rear end, intake manifold replacement to name a few problems ). Some people never have to use it. For us poor souls that had their car built on a Monday or Friday, it can come in handy.

Message: So what you are saying is that you paid the $3000 balance for the tranny? I thought it was under warranty? Plus I dont know what state you are in but most states have a 30 day/1000 mile warranty even with used car lots where the dealer pays for atleast half the cost of major drivetrain failure within that timeframe... especially if only 75 miles later?

Why not start a savings account for repairs?

Message: No, I said the dealer had wanted $4600 to rebuild it. I went to aamco and had them do it for $1950 so I wound up paying $350. It had a warranty but they limit the amount they pay. $1600 was not bad. I'm surprised they paid at all seeing as it happened after only 75 miles. They could have balked and claimed a pre-existing condition. So I paid $1300 for the warranty and $350 for the trans. I still come out $300 ahead, plus i still have a warranty for any other surprises that come along.
