Subject: Why the hell can't all big rigs do this? IP: Logged
Message: I was on 95 the other day and came up on one of those big rigs we all hate. The one with the dump truck type open container in the back, with the poorly secured tarp covering the top that only goes about a foot down the side, so that all these clumps of dirt and stones and pebbles underneath can fly out and attack the paint of vehicles in traffic behind it. But on this one truck, the tarp actually went about half way down the sides of the truck, pretty much eliminating the problem. Made me wonder, why CANT THEY ALL DO THAT?

Message: More than likely,
That specific trucker actually got taken to court by someone over the "pebbles destroying auto paint" issue and lost. So, he would rather cover it up with a $200 tarp than pay $5000-$10000 for a new paint job.

Message: What the hell do you have against trucks eddy? Your one of those people who give the trucks no room when they are trying to turn a corner or hide in there blindspots when going down the highway!

Message: In most cities now there are making it manditory to have a tarp exspecially for hauling hot mix and when its windy. My family just had a discussion about all of this because we are all truckers.

Message: Whoa, wait, what's that sound I hear? A bunch of people who don't know me and don't share my roads acting like they know how I drive? Jeez, I guess maybe some of you are truck drivers and are getting defensive or something. OR maybe you're the kinds of pussies who like to verbally put others in their place on message boards because you're too afraid of getting your a$$ kicked in face to face confrontations outside the safety of the internet. I mean, all I did was comment on something I saw a trucker do that I appreciated, and everybody's jumping all over me like they're venting other frustrations here.
First off, I hate being next to or near ANYTHING on the highway for an extended period of time, least of all trucks. So I don't hover in blindspots or fly around them when they swing wide for a turn. If anything, Ill accelarate to a 20-30 mph speed differential just to get away from them.
Unfortunately on the roads where I drive, it's not always so easy. They're often two lane and crowded, so roads and traffic conditions don't often allow me to stay as far away from these things as I'd like. Case in point, that's how my windshield got cracked last year on my Ranger. 65-70 mph in crowded rush hour traffic keeping 6-8 car lengths behind, and a clump of that cement still managed to hit my truck. Sometimes you could be doing everything in your power to avoid them, keeping your distance or even being 2-3 lanes over from them, and that stuff can still fly a long distance. So even though improper following distance can sometimes be a culprit, it's not always the only one.
These truckers often make it worse by trying to stay in the fast lane as much as possible, going way above the speed limit while on flat ground or pointed downhill, then slowing to match the speed of the car next to them while going uphill, meaning they may be stuck in a certain spot in the left lane with people trapped behind them in that artificial hailstorm for miles at a time. This is, by the way, another reason why I see no good reason for any big rig to be anywhere other than the far right or middle lane of a highway.
To those of you who are responsible enough to know if you have loose debrise like dirt, wet cement, or whatever other kinds of sh!t back there that it should be covered, I commend you. Unfortunately there's far too many of your brethren who drive at wreckless speeds down the highways with poorly covered debris flying out of the back of their trucks causing many thousands in property damage and lots of inconvenience and irritation. The fact that laws are in the works dealing with this very issue indicates that it's a serious problem within the industry that goes beyond some tailgaters getting their just deserts. It's probably something trucking companies should have done on their own a long time ago, but because it's so hard to actually prove liability in those cases, they held off doing anything in order to save a few pennies until the government forced them to.
And they don't seem to care much about doing something to fix the problem until the costs of the damages they cause meet or exceed the costs of buying a few more cubic feet of that goddam tarp.

Message: So were damned if we do, damend if we dont? If we try to stay away from trucks we're 'swerving' around them dangerously, if we choose not to do that we're 'hovering' in their blind spots? I do not swerve. I move left, kick it up, and get past that puppy as quickly as I can. In my mind, the less time I am anywhere near him, the less time there is for a catastrophy or any other incident to occur. Such as a clod of wet cement blowing out from underneath the tarp that protrudes a quarter of an inch down the side of the truck and smacking my windshield or my paint.

Message: you think thats bad, last time i had some buttwipe run up next to me and ride next to my trailer tandoms i blew a tire, all i saw was car parts flying, and him hit the shoulder (in my mirror)i went to the next exit got a new tire and hauled ass.
lesson:never ride next to a bigtruck, pass or stay back.
ok 1 more good 1
i was running south on 75,just north of atlanta in the far right lane(its 4 lanes wide)when i see this guy in a pickup in my mirror running atleast 85 in the far left lane i got to about 200 feet from a exit when johnny speed guy bring it across 3 lanes about takes my bumper off and hits the offramp, well here is where it got good,i look at him ready to give him the finger he looks at me and smiles then all the sudden all i see is smoke from all 4 tires, then nothing but AIR.
the dumbass must have known how sharp the offramp was but still felt the need to pass me before he got off,i bet he flew 50 feet was like watching dukes of hazzard,he came to a stop and last i saw he got out.
