Subject: removing pinstriping IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
Question, How hard is it to remove the pinstriping from a 94 dak? It apears to be a sticker of some kind but I am not sure. Any info would be great. If it can't be removed is it safe to wax over (meaning will it smear or anything), be advised that I normaly use a rotory buffer for the waxing part. Thanks all.

Message: There is a rubber wheel that goes on the end of a hand drill... it removes the stripe with no problem..... paint and body shops use them... you might be able to find it a NAPA but im not sure and i believe 3M makes one....

Message: On my 98 my pin stripes pealed off with no resistants at all. It was like pealing a sticker off of glass. The only thing I can think is they waxed it real good before putting on the pinstriping. But I also thought I would take off the DODGE and other decals they they two just peal right off. This is not the norm. Use a hair dryer on a hot day also try goof off after words to get the rest.

Message: I've been a professional freehand paint pinstriper for 25 years, so I can help with this. Age is a factor with some vinyl tape stripes. They are generally more pliable the newer they are. The vinyl quality has improved some in recent years, so you may still have enough flexability left in the decal to remove it with only mild heat. A heat gun works best, but a regular home hair dryer can be used. Heat the area where you wish to start removal for about 20-30 seconds, holding the dryer at a 45 degree angle to the surface (so air will still flow thru and not burn up the element). Lift a corner loose and start leading (pre-heat) the next area to be removed, and continue stretching the decal off with an even, slow effort; feel it out. If the tape was really old, you will have the glue separating from the vinyl. In this situation, use turpentine or mineral spirits on a rag, wet the surface, and remove the glue with the rag (if easy) or a plastic bondo squeege or plastic razor blade. ALWAYS perform this procedure in the shade. The "eraser wheel" also works. One thing to consider: tape stripes/decals/graphics removed from medium-to-dark colored vehicles after being on for over a year may have UNFADED paint underneath. That is what you are seeing when you remove a UV sun block like tape or other paint. This effect is very minimal on something like white or yellow vehicles. Buffing may help in some cases. For removing PAINTED stripes, mix white polishing compound with mineral spirits or enamel reducer 50/50 on a rag, and rub away the stripe, clearing away occasionally to see how you're progressing. An experienced buffer will also work. Again, shade only. Good luck :)
