Subject: Thinking of buying a Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I am in the market for a new (used 02 or 03) truck and am thinking about either a Ranger or Dakota. I am just curious if there are any recurring problems with the Dakota. I have read here that there are some problems with the brake rotors and ball joints. Any other prevelant problems?
Thanks!

Message: I have 02 QC with 4.7, love the truck, does have most the common quirks that you get with dakotas, but the a-arms bushings and ball joints have been good. I live on a 2mile dirt road that is bumpy and reeks havoc on my suspension and truck is hanging in there. Thanks to this site you can find the info you need to help fix problems.
Good luck.

Message: If you like a smaller truck...go with the Ranger. If you want a bad a$$ looking truck...go with the Dakota. I've owned both and I prefer the Dakota. I haven't had any problems with my Dakota (2002 QC 4X4). Ball joints haven't been an issue up to this point. I think they fixed that problem after 2001 as I haven't seen any bulletins for post 2001 dakotas. THe only issue you may have is with the MPG. However, I wouldn't trade my V8 for a 4 or 6. If you are going to use the vehicle for a daily driver, you might want to stick with the better MGP with the Ranger. Keep in mind though that the MPG on the Ranger is not much better at around 19 MPG

Message: I agree with "another mark"....This is my 1st Dakota and couldn't be happier but ALMOST screwed up and bought the V6 and am happy I didn't ...Paid about $1500 extra for 5sp a/t and 4.7 but definitel am happy...Drove "small" trucks for 10 yrs, then went with full size Chevy and finally found the "RIGHT" truck for me...Hope that helps Lou !

Message: I traded my Ranger for a Dakota, still very happy with the choice. Two years, 27K miles and NO problems so far. The 4.7l V8 (w/3.92 rear-end AT) gets 12mpg which is nothing to write home about, but the old 4.0l V6 in the Ranger got the same thing while towing and had NO balls doing it. Dakota (especially the Quad like I got) is the perfect size - not too big, not too small. Got more info on my website...

Message: I've owned a Ranger, an S-10 and now a 2002 Dakota. I like the Dakota best because it's bigger and the V-8 power is tough to ignore.
I've had the ball joint problem but it's not really that big a deal. Replacement parts were about $80 bucks and an afternoon in the driveway and it's good to go.

Message: Don't! I made that mistake recently. I've driven a Ranger for the laat 10 years. I thought I was "trading up" when bought a 2002 QC. It gets gets 12 mpg, the front end is already rattling @ 24K, the power steering pump sings like a sewing machine and I was aghast when I drug it home and crawled under it for the first time. All the metal parts, bolts, clamps, hangers, fittings underside of bumpers, just everything is rusting. Hell, my '98 Ranger looks like an '03 compared to this thing. They obviously use cheap fastners and metal in all their parts.
This thing is heavy; it may go with a V8, but it doesn't stop well; it's brakes are the same size as the Ranger that weighs about 900 lbs. less. I'm just real sorry I made this choice. I'd never buy another Dodge; they are just junk and even though I paid cash for it, I'm in it too deep to get out of without loosing $$$. The sad thing is I still have my well-maintained Ranger and nobody will give me what it's worth.

Message: I was merging onto 95 tonight and the wussy Sunday drivers were out in full force. All kinds of indecisiveness right around the merging lane. A whole bunch of people already on the highway who didn't feel like slowing down or moving over, and a whole bunch of people in front of me who evidently paid thousands of dollars for modern cars with alot of horses so they can merge into 70 mph traffic doing 55. I said screw that, floored it, and by the time I looked down at the speedometer I was doing 100 and everybody was disappearing in my rearview mirror. LOVE MY 4.7. Even in my Quad 4x4 it got balls.

Message: I ownwed a 1999 dodge dakota never had any problems with it had 90,000 miles when i traded it for an 03 ranger edge .biggest mistake i ever made never was satisfied with the ranger no problems with the ranger just seemed weak and cheap compared to a dakota.i finally sold it and bought a 2001 dodge dakota it doesn't have all the options the 99 had but i love it also.i have nothing against ford but once you have owned a dakota i don't think you could be satisfied with a ranger.the only drawback i see with dodge is the gas mileage but the ranger isn't that much better.

Message: Frontier isn't that bad of a truck. Only thing that kept me out of one was it didn't seem sized to fit normal sized people and the Dak offered more naturally aspirated horsepower and torque for about the same price.
