Message: To each his own. A spray liner protects something that you're permenantly covering, doesn't make sense to me. At the same time it offers skid proofing and is damn near bulletproof from what I hear, so a stong choice for that. A drop in can be easily removed if no longer wanted or replaced. At the same time they can trap water underneath and promote rust.
I personally have the drop in, but went back and forth hardcore before I decided. I basically decided that you can't really go wrong either way and went with what was easier for me, a factory under the rail drop in..

Message: I got my truck used with a Line-X spray-in already there. It wasn't something I was looking for right away, but now I definitely would not go without it.
Definitely check the finishes of different spray-ins. Some (Like Line-X) are harder - slightly more abrasive, but it is possible to actually slide stuff on it if you want to. Some are tacky and almost sticky so you have to carry something all the way to the cab in the bed - NOTHING slides.
If you're having it done, the installation process is critical. I read somewhere here that if they don't abrade the bed properly the first time, the spray-in will peel out if you're not careful.
Don't know much about drop-ins. They will protect better against dents in the bed, though. If you drop something hard on a spray-in, it may or may not tear, but it will probably dent the bed, whereas a drop-in would probably break, but might save you from a dent. They might be easier to clean, too.

Message: If I just painted my truck the last thing I would want is some guy spraying anything on the bed and having the potential of over spray in the least on other body panels.

Message: so you'd rather the paint job be ruined by what ever goes in the bed. Be it a drop in liner or otherwise. it doesn't take a smart person to know that you should cover where ever you don't want the stuff. You should switch auto body shops if you don't already know that.

Message: When I got my truck I got a drop it. One day I was driving down the road and went around a sharp turn and had 1 gal of paint in the back. Well, it tipped over and came open and messed up every thing. I would have had to get the bed re-painted to put a new liner in it. So I got a spray on. It is great. Wish I would have done it from the start. Yes you will save about $200.00 with the drop in but in the long run you will like it better. Things will not slip/slide.
