Message: Brad,
I dont think Dakotas have CV Joints. CV Joints are for front wheel drive cars. I may be mistaken, but pretty positive.

Message: Brad,
I believe this is something you can do yourself. It can be much harder than replacing a "CV" joint. Although, I do not have any experience with 4 x 4's. Sorry

Message: You can buy the half shaft at RockAuto.com for about $100.00. ($80.00 core) It depends on how long you have had a rip, your joint may be bad. If not, you follow the same to replace the boot. once you get the hub nut 32mm or 35mm (forget) off it is a simple job.
1. with the vehicle on the ground, loosen the hub nut about a 1/4 turn and lugnuts. ALso, loosen the bolts that hold the half shaft to the transfer case, i think that there are six. (you will not lose any gear oil you don't go in that far)
2. lift the truck up by frame (not control arm yet) and put it on a jackstand. Remove the wheel, brake caliper and rotor. Do not let the caliper hang and pull at the hose.
3. remove the sway bar brackets that connect them to the control arm and rotate out of the way. you can remove the shock to make it easier but I don't think you have to.
4. Remove the bolts conecting the half shaft to the transfer case and using a jack, lift the lower control arm up until it is parallel to the ground and carfully slide the shaft out and down.
5. if there is a lot of play in the joint it may need to be replaced, otherwise purchase a new boot and clean the grease out of the joint, regrease it and put the new boot on. Make sure you mark the boot location on the shaft and joint so you can put the new one on exactly where the old one was. There is a retainer clip that holds the shaft into the joint, this needs to be removed and the joint will come out. Wrap the splines on the end of the shaft with electrical tape and slide the new boot on, tape will keep from tearing at the boot. Pack the joint with grease and secure the boot. reinstall the shaft.

Message: FYI - 4x Daks do have CV joints in the front. The drive shaft for the 4 wheel drive (different, going to the transfer case) is commonly called a propeller shaft.
