Subject: Tranny service questions
IP: Logged

Message:
2000 4.7L Club Cab 96k miles

Questions:
What type of regular maintenance should I be doing to my transmission? I have been having my tranny flushed and fluid changed every 20k or so, sometimes sooner.

Should I have anything inside the tranny adjusted (ie. bands, etc)?

Should I have filter changed or would the flushing each time keep it clean?

Sorry if any of these are idiot questions, I only use and break them, not fix them.

No bands, but you do have 2 filters in there that are overdue to be changed.

The manual for my '02 QC AWD says that the two internal filters need to be changed and the fluid needs to be drained, then filled with new ATF+4 every 30k miles. This is a must-do to keep your warranty intact; and, it sounds like with this maintenance schedule, you're liable to get pretty good life outta your tranny.

Lurkin, what automatic transmission does not have bands? Never heard of that. How does it operate without them?

The 45RFE in my 02 QC AWD does not have bands. It is elecronically controlled and is manipulated by solenoids.

The 45RFE trans does not need to have the bands adjusted like other Mopar trannys during the fluid service.

Always have the filters replaced when the ATF is drained or flushed. The quickie lube places and maybe the dealer will tell you the filters do not need to be changed with a flush, but they don't want to do a complete job that takes a significant amount of time more than just the flush. Flushing gets out the old degraded fluid, but goes not get the contaminated filters clean, even though they say that they get back flushed while doing the flush.

RAH, RAH! I was wondering when the Amsoil flamer was going to show up.

EyeDrip can blow a pack of weezels! Amsoil Universal ATF is a great ATF, much better than ATF+4 and about the same price if you get it at their preferred pricing. Many people use it and the only complaints you might hear are about thier weird sales tactics and price, but what good product doesn't cost more.

DOH, I guess I am a suckup since I recommended Amsoil. Wonder when I am going to get my free case of oil. LOL

EyeTrip,
You know I could be nasty like you but thats called
"flaming" and it's what turns people off here at this site.

I push a lot of products that I have used and or tested over
the years that simply outperform all others and that save
people a lot of money.

I guess you never see my posts concerning battery brands
(Optima and Exide Orbital), Bed Liners (Line-X), U-joints
(Spicer) or MALCO Products have you?

Yes, I am an "Amsoil Pusher" and proud to be one !

Unfortunately one of the members of this site, EyeTrip, always likes to do this to the Amsoil Guy. Flame Flame Flame. So then some people come out in the Ams-guys defense. Heck, the Ams-guy is helpful and is a paying advertiser and a member. No respect. No respect. Then this member, Eyetrip, takes it into the gutter and attacks everyone, even attacking me in the past thinking I was an alias of the Ams-guy. Sorry Mikey102, I don't know anything about tranny's.

Yeah sometimes the simplest questions turn into a circus here:-) But seriously, all that needs to be done on the tranny service/flush is to have the filters replaced and fluid topped off or flushed.

Flushing the fluid probably takes the shops 30 minutes to connect the machine and flush the fluid. Replacing the filters requires the pan to be dropped, filters replaced, pan re-installed and then the fluid filled or flushed, alot more work than just flushing. Seems pretty bad to repalce the fluid without replacing the filters since there is no way to get out the contaminants buried in the filter media.

Back flushing is like taking off your air filter and blowing air through it backwards, alot of big stuff will come out, but the fine particles are still trapped in the filter media. Where does all of the back flushed contaminants go in a tranny, back into the tranny. Some of it will come out in the fluid but what about the rest of the stuff left in the trans? I would rather leave the harmluf stuff trapped in the filter and replace the filter.

Hey! This amsoil stuff sounds great. I think I`ll tell all my friends about. You can put this in a standard tranny as well I take it? Is it as much work to change the fluid and filters in a 1989 tranny?
