Subject: Engine Idle and Surge IP: Logged
Message: The past few days my engine has had a rough idle at traffic lights and sometimes it will drop to around 350-400 and surge back up to about 800rpm and then back down to 500 and repeat it all over again. A couple times it has even stalled. I have no idea why.
The one thing that I did before all of this was that I jumped my friend's car. IT was a bad jump however because as soon as we hooked everything up his Lincoln was turning over without the key in the ignition and his battery started smoking. I took the cables off right away and they was hot.
I have no idea whether this could have anything to do with my very recent idle issues as they begun after that.
Battery Test Light is fine and engine starts perfectly and all fuses appear to be in good shape.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

Message: Try resetting the PCM by removing the connector from the battery and turning the ignition to start position for about 20 seconds. May or may not be your problem. What engine and does this occur all the time (while in park, drive, neutral)?

Message: Its a 2000 4.7L 2wd Quad Cab with 50K miles. Well I reset the computer and everything but still have the problem but I have some more details.
In park, drive, and neutral it idles perfectly. I believe the problem to be related the the transmission and its downshifting. If I come to a complete stop at a regular rate or stop fast from 40+ mph when I am about 0.5 seconds from coming to a complete stop it will stumble to ~300 and back up to 800 a couple times or stall. If it does not stall it will idle perfectly at 500rpm after that.
If I come to a complete stop by breaking lightly from 40+ mph and not quickly there are no issues or stumbling whatsoever.
I believe that for some reason my transmission is just not downshifting in time properly. Otherwise, the transmission shifts fine. I did check the fluid level and for some reason it does seem a bit high so I will probably drop the pan this weekend and change fluid and filters since its about that time of the year anyways.
If anyone else has experienced this any information would be greatly appreciated. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Message: hey, i have the same issue intermittently. I have an 02 quad cab 4.7L 4WD A/T. when I come to a light the engine rpm will drop way down and then it seems to "recover", but a few times while parking as I shift from drive to reverse the engine has stalled. I havent had it checked out at the dealer, but now that you have reminded me I will have to do that.

Message: I went ahead and changed out the transmission fluid and filters and it shifts a lot smoother and everything but it still wants to stall.
I went ahead and took off the throttle body and cleaned it out and I took out the IAC and cleaned the tip of it with some 3M TB cleaner and put everything together again but to no avail.
It still wants to stall or stumble when coming to a complete stop from faster speeds. When stopping slow it runs fine and stops fine no stumbling or stalling.
What could this be? I have no engine codes whatsoever and it idles perfect just struggles at complete stops.
How can I tell whether my IAC or TPS is bad?
Any Ideas?
