Message: The Dodge Dakota was introduced in the 1987 model year with the new 3.9 V-6 as the largest engine. Following the attention from the Shelby 5.2 V-8 conversions, a redesigned front end and firewall area came out in 1991 to handle the 5.2. Actually, Dodge considers 1987-1996 as "one generation" since they are basically the same from the cab rearward. The different front end in 1991, along with a factory V-8, is the reason the enthusiasts make the distiction for "GenII". 1997-2004 is "GenIII" and 2005 starts "GenIV" for enthusiasts.
