Anyone know anything about this? How does it work? Is it easy to install? How much does it cost/what is needed?

Thanks

From what I've seen, XM and Sirius are very similar in overall execution and options. I have Sirius, and am totally spoiled. Regular radio just cannot compare. There's really nothing to the install. You just need a sat. radio antenna, and these are typically magnetic units in the aftermarket kits. Route the line to the radio, and let the music begin.

I've never understood why people want to pay to listen to music.
There is a monthly fee for this service you know? Personally I
have a small collection of CD-RWs in mp3 format I play in my car
stereo which reads mp3 off recordable CDs. Much cheaper.

Have been considering this myself. www.crutchfield.com. They have all you need to do the job. The Delphi XM seems to be the best. Don't get a Sony. A friend of mine has one in an 18 wheeler and they won't stand up to any abuse. From what I understand, all you do is set the existing radio to a station not being used in your area, like 89.5 or whatever. Then set the XM transmitter for that freq. No hard wiring is required and you can switch the unit from one car to another easily.

You should do a little more research. The unbiased kind that you can't find at crutchfield or best buy/circuit city. I've always thought that I wanted to get XM, but after checking out a few home theater forums I decided on Sirious. I like that you can listen to every NFL game. Not to mention all the other sports coverage that XM doesn't have. XM offers weather and traffic where Sirious only has traffic. Both offer very similiar music/talk programming. The feature that swayed me towards sirious the most is the fact that you can listen to it from any computer at no extra cost with no extra hardware. Very nice.

As far as installation it's very simple. I highly recommend getting an xm/sirious ready deck. The way mine works is you push the "band" button like on any radio. There is 2 am bands, 3 fm bands, and 2 satellite bands.

So you don't pay for television either I assume. Just use your VHS or DVD's along with the 13 free channels you get with rabbit ears right?

I have an XM Roady in my 2004 Dakota and believe me, I never listen to anything but XM now. It is worth every cent of the $10 a month. $2.50 a week for commercial free music and instant traffic and weather, anywhere I drive in this country.

Sirius has weather now. I have an MP3 unit as well (both methods have merits---I use my MP3 to record Sirius broadcasts!--the best of both worlds). With Sirius, I get music from all genres, without being blasted with only the tunes the music companies are paying radio stations to play. There's variety you just can't touch with regular radio, and the quality is better as well. Plus, and this is a biggie....all the music channels are commercial-free. That's woth $13/month right there. Now, if they'd just come out with commercial-free television. The competition between XM and Sirius is great. It's making them both even better as more subscribers sign on. Oh, and with Sirius (don't know about XM), there's no censorship of lyrics, etc.

XM radio is worth every penny. The amount of time we spend in our cars these days is incredible. No more searching for channels while traveling. No more commercials. I love it. For installation, I would highly encourage the use of an Auxillary Input Converter which will turn the CD changer port of your factory deck into a RCA jack inputs. You can then use the RCA outs from any device (XM radio, Playstation, MP3) and play it through the factory deck. With the "simple" product, you lose the use of the CD changer but if you don't have one anyway, why not use the existing port? There is also a product that will allow you to keep the function of the CD changer. Check out logjamelectronics.com. Works great for me and I get much better sound quality than using the FM modulator option.

About the RCA jacks that are converted from the cd changer wires. Would that trick work for hooking up some subs? And how would i go about hooking up the converter?

Where I am at we get no reception with rabbit ears due to mountains so I get basic cable only. We're talking about listening to music though. There is no comparison here. Listening to music in your truck is free on a radio or with CDs. If you want to spend money listening to the same music you already have on CD then you like wasting money. Maybe I should buy some stock in satellite radio now. I bet you use one of those online music services where you pay to keep your collection of songs over and over again too, don't you?

The difference is, I could never carry all the CDs that would equal all the variety of Sat. Radio. I can keep all those CDs at home and not have them flying all over, getting scorched in the heat, sat on, or scratched. Actually, I hear mostly music I don't have on CD. If you like listening to commercials, free radio is for you, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, I want more, and you get what you pay for. Plus, if I ever need some local info, the "free" censored, bought-and-paid-for by the music companies radio stations are still there, and still "free" for me as well.

Any way you shake it, the sat radio service monthly fee works out to less than 50 cents a day. I can find that in the floorboards, so as wastes of money go, it's pretty small.

The point all of you, even TV guy is missing is that once you pay
for your music (CD or TAPE or whatever format) why do you pay
to now listen to it on your stereo? You don't NEED to buy the
music a second time (or infinite times in the case of you
subscription buyers using XM)

Now do you all get it? The guy isn't watching TV in his truck.
That's not the comparison. Let's stick with the music argument.

Let's fight!

I am almost ready to get one myself. $10 a month sounds cheap. But I'm so tapped and I just had to get a legal sub to Direct TV and now that is going to cost us around $70 a month!

GOT to get my SOPRANO's!

Anyone had any problems with alternator noise in their XM receiver? I have a Delphi Roady that has a bad hum/whine in it as soon as I plug the power cord in. Doesn't matter if I use the cigarette lighter or the aux power receptacle. Works fine in my other car.
