Subject: Man. trans lube substitute IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dak 4.7L 5sp manual trans. Is there a good substitute for the Mopar Manual Transmission Oil part#4874464. This stuff is like $10 a quart from Mopar and I am looking for a cheaper alternative. Any ideas?
Thanks

Message: Motor oil? That's suprizes me. What size motor do you have? According to Dodge, they use different transmissions, I assume that the V6 and the V8 are different. Or it may be the 4.7L is different than the 5.9L I'm not sure.

Message: There are three five speed manual trannys: AX15, NV1500, and NV3500. They use different stuff. According to my Haynes Manual:
NV1500 and NV3500: Mopar MT lube, 4874464 (as posted before)
AX15: use SAE 75W-90
I dont see how 10w30 can work, it is much thinner than 75w90.
Fxstcguy, assuming you have the NV3500, just buy the mopar lube. It may be $10 a quart, but it is good quality, and lets face it, you dont change the fluid very often anyway. No sense shortening the life of the tranny just to save a buck or two.

Message: I have a 1988 Dakota 4x4 with a 3.9L. The owners manual calls for 10w30 for the transmission. I know it sounds weird to use 10w30 but the transmission has 295,000 km on it and has never given me a problem.

AMSOIL 5w-30 (product code HDD, ASL or XLF) substitute for
lube for Getrag G-360, NV1500, NV3500, NV5600.
1/2 the price of factory fluids !
AMSOIL 75w-90 (product code AGR or TGR) substitute for lube
for AX-15 and NV4500 (TGR is the Racing Gear Oil).
Cost more than factory fluids but worth it !
