I have a 98 Dakota extended cab 4x4 w/ V6 automatic, and in the next couple of weeks I plan to replace all the brake pads\shoes, front rotors (they're becoming a little warped), and the ball joints.

I plan to order the ball joints from www.rockauto.com, and pick up the other parts locally. I'm confident with the brake-related stuff, but I'm curious about the ball joints since I've never changed them out on a Dodge.

I've read many posts here that deal with them and I've noticed that some people have changed out just the ball joints themselves, while others have changed out the entire control arm. What are the pros and cons of this? And I'd like to get some feedback from those who have already done this (both ways) to get any tips or recommendations from you (hindsight being 20/20 and all..).

Finally, thanks to all of you that have helped me through numerous Dakota related stuff in the past, I've probably never talked to you, and this is my first post, but this site is a treasure chest of knowledge that has helped me many times...

If the control arm is good, it does not have to be replaced. You will have to drill out the rivets and replace with bolts. People have stated that it is a challenge but very doable. How many miles? Good Luck

Ooops, I guess mileage would have been nice. It's got 112,000 and (looks for some wood somewhere ..."knock knock knock") has been very reliable. Aside from a cracked distributor cap, I've had to do nothing more than basic upkeep. As a matter of fact, I just replaced the Cat for the first time at 105,000 miles...
