Subject: NGK Platinum VS BOSCH Platinum IP: Logged
Message: I'm getting new plugs put in my Dakota. It's a 2002 Sport with the 4.7 V8. I've read many posts and I really only want to know what works well with a pure stock 4.7 as it's obviously very different from the other V8's (SOHC vs. OHV). I'm assuming the SOHC's (with the higher RPM power range) will react different to some plugs then the 5.2 or the 5.9. I've been told that they come out of the factory with Platinum Champions but have read posts that platninum plugs will destroy the coils on the plugs. Is this true...why would they put platinum in at the factory then?
So I'm debating whether to buy Bosch Platinums (the regular ones, not the +4's) vs. the NGK G-Power Platinums? I've heard mixed reviews about the Bosch, but haven't heard much at all about NGK.
I'm not interested in putting in Autolites, don't wanna change them again next year.
So input on NGK G-power platinum or BOSCH Platinum would be greatly appreciated.
I'm getting the plugs changed tomm. morning so any speedy reply would be great!!
Thanks

Message: I keep them for 180'000- 220'000 miles! Been through a 93, 94, 97, 98' 2000, and 2002 dakota. All hit at least 175'000 before unloading them. I bought the 93, 97, and 2002 new, but the others were slightly used! I take very good care of them, try to change oil every 2500, but it usually happens at 3000. Only had a major problem with the 97 the rear end locked up at 130'000. None of the others ever gave me any major problems. All were v8's 93-98 were 5.2, 2000 was 4.7, and 02 was a 5.9 QC. I miss the 98 it was my favorite!

I run the BOSCH PLATINUM due to the fact that they will last the
longest (I ran a set for 0ver 150,000 with no problems).
AMSOIL now sells the BOSCH Products through their catalog and
since I use their oil I just order them through AMSOIL.

Message: I've since called the dealer, and no, the '02 4.7's don't come with platinum...just copper core Champions. So I've deciced not to go with platinum just in case they do wreck the coils down the road. I've put in the Autolite 5224's (as I have a stock thermostat). No real apparent performance difference but not any worse. I guess plugs are just plugs.

Message: I like the Bosh because they perform better, but they are only good for about a year or 25K. It sounds like you drive more than 25K per year. I've never been able to get more than 25K out of a set of Bosh Platinums. After about 10-20K the engine starts idling rough and gas mileage drops off. After 20K at least one out of every set I've pulled out has had the tiny platinum tip inside the ceramic missing. I've taken them back to AutoZone in the past to exchange them. They quit allowing that. Originally the plugs were guarantied to last 100,000 miles (limited warranty). They don't stand behind this anymore. I have ran these in several engines (chevy, ford, Mitsu, and Dodge) and the same thing happened to all of them. An engine builder I was using to machine my racing engines for the dirt track told me that he wouldn't put a Bosch Platinum in his lawn mower and that he uses NGK. I switched to NGK's that day and I have had no more plug problems. That was 7 years ago. From 1993-1997 I averaged a set of Bosh Platinums every 4-6 months between my truck(s) and my race car. Since I switched to NGK, the only time I've replaced the plugs was when I replaced the factory originals.

so you are happy with the bosch in your r/t....?...i might try them out...i have 10,500 miles on my 03 r/t now and it seems to idle a little lumpy(rough) and after reading many many posts it seems like maybe the plugs might smooth that out...any more thoughts on this...?

Message: Platinum is silliness. Two reasons: First, ignition systems in modern cars and trucks have enough energy to light New York. That alone will keep plugs clean. Second, copper is a much better conductor of electricity than platinum. Nascar, FIA(Formula 1), IRL and CART engine builders use nothing but copper. Oh yeah, I haven't seen any drag racer put platinum plugs in anything yet, either. Snake oil.

Message: Hey PLL,
Sorry about your Protege! Mine is sure a neat little car. It's an LX with an automatic. All I've done is put wheels and tires on on it(195/50-15's from the stock 175/70/13's). It gets 35mpg going 75 with the AC on. My Dakota hasn't seen over 19.5 yet:)

Message: I ran Bosch Platinum +2, then +4 on my '92 5.2 Dak that ultimately had 217K miles. I changed the plugs every 50K. The truck would cold start great in any weather. I never "lost" a single electrode tip. I ran the OEM and one replacement set of Champions in my '01 4.7 before installing 4418 +4's over 7K ago. The most noticeable difference with the 4.7 is the smooth idle now. Mpg is about 1/2 mile/gallon better. Unless something happens drastically, I'll keep 'em in. The "platinum is bad for coils" theory hoists the B.S. flag in short order.

Message: bosch makes superb products. i use and see them everyday however, i am running autolite's because i am doing a t-stat and an msd or accel ignition for which, platinum plugs are not recommended. i change bosch platinum plugs on cars at work every 100k, and they are always running good and look great when they come out. the cars i work on put those plugs in stock so the ignition sys. may be different but, i only change the plugs because it is recommended, not out of necessity. the champions work fine and the autolites too. put the plug in you feel comfortable with and can afford. get ones that fit your current and future applications.
