Subject: mirror painting? IP: Logged
Message: Ok guys here is my question. I have a 92 Dak with the black plastic mirrors. I decided to have the body shop paint them after the plastic started to get a little faded and such. Anyway the paint started to get little bubbles all over it. So i had them painted a second time and still the same bubble prob. The body shop said the paint could be reacting with the plastic or something but now what do i do should i try to get someone else to paint them using a different method or what as my mirrors look really bad? Thanks in advance for any help guys.

Message: LOL the paint shop doesnt kow what is wrong? I would think they should know what the hell they are doing. I had my mirrors painted along with my door handles and tailgate handle. The guy who did it put down a filler first to take out the texture on the mirrors then sanded them down. Then they were painted. Havent had any problem with them at all.

Message: When plastics are molded a release agent is used to keep them from sticking to the mold. Reesidue from the release agent may still be left. Wash them with a grease cutting soap like Dawn.

Message: You need to use a 'prep sol' or similar product to reduce the chance of having paint adhesion problems. Also, you need to use an adhesion promoter before you prime.
Unfortunalty, it doesn't sound like the body shop used either before doing yours.
Now you've got a REAL problem because whatever was on those mirrors before they were painted will have been ground into the plastic when it was sanded, no way to get it all off now.
Start from scratch with new mirrors.

Message: there is a section on the home page (of this website) and one of the items is 'painting your door handles' take a look at that, i think the door handles are made of the same stuff as the mirrors
