Subject: Weird cooling issues on 97 5.2 Ram
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a strange problem with my 97 Ram. A
few weeks ago I noticed my upper radiator
hose was rock hard before the engine had
fully warmed up. I thought I might have a head
gasket issue, But decided to replace the
radiator cap and all was fine until early this
week when It happened again. The top hose
was again rock hard before the truck had fully
warmed up. I relased the pressure with the
lever on my cap and it dumped some coolant
into the resivior and restored the pressure to
normal, However my concern is with summer
approaching I might have problems. The truck
runs a 200 degrees all the time (I even been
on some long trips since this started) and it
has not been a problem. I ran the truck for 45
minutes today with the cap off and didn't see
any of the telltale bubbles you would see if
exhaust gasses were present in the coolant. I
had it into the dealer and they said it didn't
happen with them and said to flush the
radiator and see what happens. Does anyone
have any ideas? The dealer seems to think 1
of 2 things, either I'm insane or it might be a
partially clogged radiator. I've been told by
some if I had a Blown Head Gasket I would
have water in the oil or overheating along with
my excess pressure in the cooling system.

Thanks all.

Sounds like you're seeing the buildup of pressure from the bottom side before the thermostat is opening. It may be getting a bit sluggish and opening slower. Meantime, the heat is transferring through and pressure is building through the radiator, and causing the upper hose to "feel the heat" so to speak, til the stat opens.

Same thing happened to me 2 months ago after I had my cooling system flushed. Turned out to be the thermostat. It eventually failed and wouldnt open.
